Crispy Air Fryer Bacon with a Twist
Air Fryer Twisted Bacon is deliciously ultra-crisp, salty, and so flavorful. Everyone loves bacon; it is, after all, America’s Food. No matter whether you just got your first air fryer or are already a pro, consider trying it- this is the best twisted bacon recipe.
It can be served with a side of eggs for breakfast, or with a dipping sauce as a quick and easy snack. I promise it’s insanely good, and you can even customize it to your desired flavor whether sweet or spicy!
One of the best things about making bacon in the air fryer is that the only thing you’ll need to wash when you’re done is the air fryer basket. No more cleaning your pan, your stovetop, and backsplash from the messy package of bacon and grease that splatters absolutely everywhere.
If you’re like me, you’ll be making this twisted bacon in the air fryer all the time, and it’s so handy because you can add it to just about everything. I love it on top of a fresh green salad, as part of a sandwich, or just on its own to snack on with dip. It’s a useful way of cooking bacon quickly in the morning for breakfast with no fuss for recipes that require crumbled bacon too, like my Air Fryer Cheese and Bacon Muffins!

Pro Tip: How to Prevent Smoking
One of the biggest problems I hear about cooking bacon is that the kitchen fills with smoke. This can be caused when the grease splatters onto the heating element, and there are two ways you can avoid that.
Firstly, I recommend reducing the temperature to 350 degrees F. While this will cause the bacon twists a little longer to cook, it should cause less smoke because it should slow the bacon grease splatter. This will mean that you need to cook the bacon longer, but you won’t get the smoke.
Secondly, you can put a piece of bread underneath the bacon to absorb the oil dripping off the bacon. Depending on how your air fryer basket is set up, you can place it between the two baskets (if there is space) or just underneath the bacon.
FAQs
Absolutely! The same method will work, whether you use pork or turkey bacon. The only thing different is that I would reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F and set the time for 8 to 10 minutes.
No, there is no reason to add any oil or spray to the twisted bacon. The natural grease from the bacon is all you need to get incredibly crispy bacon twists.
That would depend on your air fryer model. The best thing would be to read the instruction manual that comes with your air fryer. For this twisted bacon recipe, I recommend preheating it to 400 degrees for a couple of minutes before you start.
The basket or air fryer tray will get greasy after making bacon, just like your skillet or pan. The best thing to do is give it a few squirts of Dawn Powerwash and then clean the basket with a soft sponge or kitchen cloth.
Many air fryer models can be fully submerged underwater. Never clean it with bleach or harsh chemicals though, because they can damage the non-stick coating.
Why Do We Twist Bacon?
The idea to twist bacon in an air fryer actually came from a member of my Facebook Group, who was trying to fit more bacon into the basket.
She was trying to make an entire batch of bacon in the air fryer basket, and she noted that twisting it worked really well in allowing her to fit in all the strips that she wanted.
If you have a large-sized air fryer, you may not need to do this, but this is a genius idea for everyone who wants to fit more bacon into a smaller basket!
Why may the cooking time for bacon vary?
The actual time it takes to cook bacon in the air fryer depends on a couple of things.
- The air fryer model you own. All air fryers cook at a slightly different rate. Air Fryer ovens tend to cook quicker than Air fryer basket models. You’ll need to refer to your owner’s manual for recommended cooking times.
- Desired doneness of twisted bacon. If you want softer bacon twists you can cook them for less time. And if you prefer it to be crunchier bacon it will take longer.
