How To Make Easy air fryer apple turnovers with puff pastry

Step One: Combine the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Mix until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together and the cornstarch to thicken the juices.

Step Two: On a lightly floured work surface, unfold the thawed sheet of puff pastry. Roll it out slightly to even it out. Cut the sheet into four equal squares; use a sharp knife, pizza wheel, or pizza cutter.

Step Three: Spoon an equal amount of the apple mixture onto half of each pastry square, leaving a small border around the edges of each puff pastry. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges of the pastry together to seal, then crimp the edges with a fork to ensure they are well sealed.

Step Four: Lightly beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the top of each turnover with the egg wash. For added sweetness and texture, sprinkle the tops of each turnover with a little granulated sugar. (or sparkling sugar)
Step Five: Preheat the air fryer temperature to 350 degrees F (175°C). Place turnovers in the air fryer basket, set cook time for 10-15 minutes or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed up.

Air Fryer Canned Apple Pie Filling Turnovers
Skip the chopping and mixing—use canned apple pie filling for a super quick and easy version of these turnovers. Simply spoon the filling directly onto your puff pastry squares, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold, seal, and bake in the air fryer as usual until golden and puffed. For extra flavor, sprinkle a little cinnamon or nutmeg on top before baking, or drizzle with a glaze once cooled. This variation is perfect for busy mornings or last-minute desserts

Easy Air Fryer Recipe Tips
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Always preheat to ensure even cooking and a perfectly golden, flaky crust.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Arrange turnovers in a single layer so hot air circulates properly for crispiness.
- Use Cold Puff Pastry: Cold pastry puffs up better and creates a flaky texture.
- Seal the Edges: Press edges with a fork to prevent filling from leaking during cooking.
- Adjust Cook Time if Needed: Depending on your air fryer model and turnover size, 10–15 minutes at 350°F usually works—check for a golden brown finish.
- Optional Egg Wash: Brush lightly with beaten egg for a shiny, golden top.
- Serve Warm: Turnovers are best enjoyed immediately but can be reheated in the air fryer for a few minutes if needed.
Storing And Reheating Instructions
- Storing: Keep leftover Air Fryer Apple Turnovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Avoid refrigerating, as it can make the puff pastry less flaky and soft.
- Reheating: Reheat turnovers in the air fryer at 325°F for 3–5 minutes until warm and crisp. You can also use a conventional oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes for a similar result.

Easy Air Fryer Recipe Faqs
Can I use frozen apples for the filling? Yes! Thaw and drain the frozen apples first to avoid excess liquid that could make the turnovers soggy.
Can I bake these in the oven instead of an air fryer? Absolutely. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
Can I make the turnovers ahead of time? Yes, you can assemble them in advance and store in the fridge or freezer. Air fry or bake them straight from the fridge or frozen when ready.
Do I need to use egg wash? No, but brushing with beaten egg gives a shiny, golden finish for a more bakery-style appearance.
Can I substitute the apples with other fruits? Yes! Try blueberries, cherries, or a mixed berry filling for a fruity variation.
How do I prevent the filling from leaking? Press the edges firmly with a fork and leave a small border around the filling to minimize leaks.
How long will the turnovers stay fresh? At room temperature in an airtight container, they’ll stay fresh for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer for best results.

Easy air fryer apple turnovers with puff pastry
Description
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon Icing Sugar, Granulated sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Mix until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together and the cornstarch to start thickening the juices.
- Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Roll it out slightly to even it out. Cut the sheet into four equal squares.
- Spoon an equal amount of the apple mixture onto one half of each pastry square, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges together to seal, then crimp the edges with a fork to ensure they are well sealed.
- Lightly beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the top of each turnover with the egg wash. For added sweetness and texture, sprinkle the tops with a little granulated sugar.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) if your model requires preheating. Place the turnovers in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not touching. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches.
- Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed up. Halfway through the cooking time, you may gently flip the turnovers to ensure even browning, but this is optional based on how your air fryer circulates air.
- Carefully remove the turnovers from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes on a wire rack before serving. They’re best enjoyed warm, offering a crispy outside with a juicy, flavorful apple filling.

Three hours ago I was craving sweets and then your recipe for apple turnovers arrived in my email. I had to read the recipe twice because I could not believe how easy it looked and how little amount of ingredients were needed. Off to the store and cooked them as written in the Ninja Foodi Smartlid and crisped the exterior in 3 mins at 395 degrees. This certainly fulfilled my cravings and your recipe sure beats rolling out dough and all. Next store trip will be loading up on the ingredients as I know this is going to be a weekly batch. Thank you, Laurie, they’re delish.
