This air fryer crab dip is the hot, cheesy, Old Bay-spiked Maryland crab dip you would order at a waterfront restaurant, made at home in 20 minutes with no oven. A full pound of sweet lump crab goes into a whipped cream cheese and sharp cheddar base, and the air fryer’s circulating heat turns the top golden and bubbling in 10 minutes flat.

I grew up close enough to the Chesapeake that crab dip showed up at every party, and I baked it in the oven for years. Moving it to the air fryer was the upgrade I did not know I needed: no 45-minute bake, no heating the whole kitchen, no scorched edges, and a better browned top than my broiler ever managed.
If you keep a seafood-heavy appetizer table, this belongs next to my Air Fryer Crab Cakes and the viral Air Fryer Crab Bites.

Why You’ll Love This Air Fryer Crab Dip
- 20 minutes, start to finish. Ten to mix, ten in the air fryer.
- Real crab, not filler. A pound of lump crab to 8 ounces of cream cheese, so you taste crab in every bite.
- Make-ahead friendly. Mix it up to two days early and air fry it when guests walk in.
- Low-carb by default. Serve it with celery and peppers instead of crackers and it is keto.
- Works in any air fryer. Basket, oven-style, Ninja Foodi — anything that fits a 1-quart dish.
What Makes This a Maryland Crab Dip
Maryland crab dip has rules. Old Bay, not generic seafood seasoning. Real lump crab, not imitation. Worcestershire and dry mustard for depth. And just enough mayonnaise and cream cheese to hold it together without burying the crab, because the whole point is to taste the crab.
It is the same seasoning base I use in my Air Fryer Crab Cakes, so if you have made those, you already own everything here except the cheddar.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Crab Dip
Twelve ingredients, most of them already in your pantry. Full amounts are in the recipe card at the bottom.

- Lump crab meat: Fresh refrigerated lump from the seafood counter, or pasteurized lump from the refrigerated case. Drain it well and pick through it for shell. More on grades below.
- Cream cheese: Full-fat block, at room temperature. Not whipped, not tub-style; those add air and water and the dip turns loose.
- Sour cream: Tang and lightness.
- Mayonnaise: Real mayonnaise. Skip the salad-dressing kind.
- Sharp cheddar: Shred it yourself. Pre-shredded cheese is dusted with starch that keeps it from melting smoothly. Some goes in the base, the rest on top.
- Old Bay seasoning: The Maryland signature.
- Worcestershire sauce: Savory backbone.
- Ground mustard: Sharpens everything around it.
- Garlic powder: Powder spreads evenly; fresh garlic stays raw and harsh in a 10-minute cook.
- Lemon juice: Brightness without tasting lemony.
- Kosher salt and black pepper: Old Bay and Worcestershire both bring salt, so taste before you add the full amount.
Optional for the top: a tablespoon of grated Parmesan, chopped chives, or crisp bacon bits.
Which Crab Meat Is Best for Crab Dip?
Lump is the sweet spot: big enough to find in a bite, cheap enough to use a full pound. Here is how the grades compare for a dip, where the pieces get folded into cheese anyway.
| Crab | What it is | Price | For this dip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jumbo lump | Whole pieces from the swimming muscles | Highest | Overkill; the chunks break when you mix |
| Lump | Smaller pieces, still sweet and tender | High | Best choice |
| Backfin | Small lump plus flakes | Moderate | Very good, and the budget pick |
| Claw | Darker meat, stronger flavor | Low | Works; the dip tastes more briny than sweet |
| Pasteurized canned (refrigerated case) | Real crab, pasteurized in the can | Moderate | Good; drain and press dry |
| Shelf-stable canned | Soft, often watery | Low | Avoid, or drain hard and use double |
| Imitation (surimi) | Pollock paste, shaped and flavored | Lowest | Edible, but sweet and rubbery; see the FAQ |
Whichever you buy, tip it into a strainer, press it gently with a paper towel, and run your fingers through it for shell. Even premium lump has a few pieces.
How to Make Crab Dip in the Air Fryer
Air fryer crab dip cooks at 375°F for 10 minutes total, in two 5-minute stages with a stir in between. The stir is what gets the center as hot as the edges; skip it and you get a browned top over a lukewarm middle.

Step 1: Whip the cream cheese. In a large bowl, beat the room-temperature cream cheese with a hand mixer until completely smooth. Lumps here are lumps in the finished dip.
Step 2: Build the base. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, 1/4 cup of the cheddar, Old Bay, Worcestershire, ground mustard, garlic powder, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix on low for about a minute. Taste it now, before the crab goes in, and adjust the salt or Old Bay.

Step 3: Fold in the crab. Add the drained lump crab and fold it in with a spatula, five or six gentle turns. Beating it here shreds the lumps you paid for.
Step 4: Fill the dish. Spread the mixture into a 1-quart oven-safe dish or small cast iron pan that fits your basket with a little room around it. Smooth the top.
Step 5: First cook. Air fry at 375°F for 5 minutes. The surface should look glossy and the edges should just start to bubble.

Step 6: Stir and top. Pull the basket, give the dip one quick stir, smooth it again, and scatter the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar over the top.
Step 7: Second cook. Air fry at 375°F for 5 more minutes, until the cheese is melted and golden in spots. The center should be steaming hot; an instant-read thermometer in the middle reads 165°F.
Step 8: Rest and serve. Let it sit 2 to 3 minutes (it comes out molten). Finish with a pinch of Old Bay and chopped chives, and serve hot with crackers or vegetables.
Tips for the Best Hot Crab Dip
- Room-temperature cream cheese is non-negotiable. Two hours on the counter. Cold cream cheese will not whip smooth.
- Drain the crab like you mean it. Watery crab is the number one cause of a loose, greasy-looking dip. Strainer, then paper towel, then a gentle press.
- Match the dish to the time. These times are for a 1-quart dish about 1.5 inches deep. A deeper dish needs 2 to 4 extra minutes in the second stage; a wide, shallow dish browns faster, so check it at 3 minutes.
- Watch the top at the 7-minute mark. Small basket air fryers run hot. If the cheese is browning before the center is hot, drop to 350°F for the rest of the cook.
- Shred your own cheddar. Bagged shreds are coated to stop clumping, and that coating stops them melting into a smooth layer.
- Taste before the crab goes in. Once the crab is folded, you cannot stir the seasoning in without wrecking the texture.
Variations and Substitutions
- Spicy crab dip: 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, a few dashes of hot sauce, or 2 tablespoons of diced pickled jalapeños in the base.
- Three-cheese crab dip: Swap half the cheddar for Gruyère or Monterey Jack, and finish the top with a tablespoon of grated Parmesan.
- Crab and artichoke dip: Fold in 1/2 cup of chopped, well-drained marinated artichoke hearts with the crab.
- Crab and spinach dip: Add 1/2 cup of thawed frozen spinach, squeezed completely dry.
- Smoky: 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika in the base and crumbled bacon on top.
- Lighter: Greek yogurt for the sour cream, light cream cheese for the full-fat block. Slightly less rich, still very good.
- Dairy-free: Plant-based cream cheese and sour cream, plus a dairy-free shredded cheddar. Check the mayonnaise label.

What to Serve with Crab Dip
The dipper has to be sturdy enough to scoop a hot, thick dip without snapping. My favorites, roughly in order:
- Old Bay saltines. My Air Fryer Old Bay Saltine Crackers are Maryland on Maryland, and they take 5 minutes.
- Homemade pita chips. Make a batch of Air Fryer Pita Chips first; they hold their crunch while the dip cooks. The ranch version is very good here too.
- Garlic bread fingers. Slice my Air Fryer Herb Garlic Bread into strips for dipping. Toasted baguette or crostini works the same way.
- Buttery crackers and thick tortilla chips. The thin, wavy ones break off in the dish.
- Vegetables, for a low-carb table. Celery sticks, cucumber rounds, bell pepper strips, endive leaves, snap peas, radish halves. Pork rinds if you want crunch and zero carbs.
For a full warm-dip spread, my Air Fryer French Onion Dip uses the same 1-quart-dish method, so you can run the two back to back in one air fryer.
Make-Ahead, Storage and Reheating
Make ahead: Mix the dip without the topping cheese, cover the dish tightly, and refrigerate up to 48 hours. Let it sit on the counter for 20 minutes before air frying and add 1 to 2 minutes to the first stage.
Refrigerator: Airtight container, up to 3 days.
Freezer: Not recommended. Cream cheese and mayonnaise break and turn grainy when thawed.
Reheat in the air fryer: Back into an oven-safe dish, covered loosely with foil for the first half, at 325°F for 4 to 6 minutes until hot through.
Reheat in the microwave: 50% power in 30-second bursts, stirring gently between each.
Leftover ideas: Spread it cold on a toasted bagel, or spoon it into mushroom caps and air fry them the way I do my Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms, 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes.non Blanc or a cold lager.

Air Fryer Crab Dip FAQ
Can you make crab dip in an air fryer? Yes. Any oven-safe dish that fits in the basket works: ceramic, glass, cast iron, or a 6-inch cake pan. The circulating heat browns the top faster than an oven and the center heats through in 10 minutes.
How long do you cook crab dip in the air fryer? 10 minutes at 375°F: 5 minutes, a quick stir and the topping cheese, then 5 more. A dish deeper than 1.5 inches needs 2 to 4 extra minutes. The center should reach 165°F.
What temperature should I use? 375°F. If your air fryer runs hot and the cheese browns before the middle is hot, finish at 350°F.
Can I use canned crab for crab dip? Yes. Pasteurized lump crab from the refrigerated case is excellent. Shelf-stable canned crab is softer and wetter, so drain it hard and consider using more of it.
Can I use imitation crab? You can, but expect a sweeter, chewier dip. A half-and-half mix of real lump and imitation is a reasonable compromise on a budget. If you have leg-style imitation crab, it is at its best in my Air Fryer Crab Bites, not in a dip.
Do I need to cook the crab first? No. Fresh and pasteurized lump crab are already fully cooked. Drain, pick for shell, fold in.
Why is my crab dip watery? Under-drained crab, whipped or tub cream cheese instead of a block, or low-fat dairy without adjusting. Drain thoroughly and use full-fat block cream cheese.
Can I make crab dip ahead of time? Yes, up to 48 hours. Mix it without the topping cheese, cover, refrigerate, and let it lose the chill for 20 minutes before air frying.
Can I make this in the oven instead? Yes. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes, adding the topping cheese for the last 5, until bubbling at the edges.
What size air fryer do I need? A 5.5-quart basket or larger fits a standard 1-quart dish. In a smaller air fryer, split the dip between two ramekins or use a 6-inch round pan.
Can I double the recipe? Yes, but cook it in two dishes, one after the other. One deep double batch leaves the center under-heated.
Is crab dip gluten-free? Is it keto? The dip itself is both. Check your Worcestershire label (some brands use malt vinegar) and choose gluten-free or low-carb dippers.
