How To Make Air Fryer Carolina Style Hot Dogs

Image of hot dogs cooking in the air fryer: "Air Fryer cooking Carolina-Style Hot Dogs for a crispy finish."

Step One: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F, and set the timer for 4 minutes. As the air fryer is heating, slice a sausage bun or sandwich roll so that it will lay open flat. Be careful not to cut the bun all the way in half.

Step Two: Once the air fryer has reached 400 degrees F, toast the bun for one minute 30 seconds, then set it aside. Slice two bun-length beef hot dogs in a circular manner with the slices about a half-inch apart down the hot dog.

Having sliced the hot dogs, it is time to wrap them. Lay one piece of center cut bacon vertically on a piece of parchment paper or cutting board. Add one hot dog horizontally to the top edge of the vertical bacon slice and roll it once to secure. Lay the second next to the first hot dog on the bacon. Make sure the rolled end of the bacon is sandwiched between the two hot dogs. At an angle, wrap the bacon twice around the two hot dogs and tuck the end of the bacon between the hot dogs. Take the second piece of bacon and tuck it is where the first piece of bacon ended. At an angle, wrap the bacon twice around the remaining half of the hotdogs.

Step Three: Secure the end of the bacon between the hot dogs. Place the bacon-wrapped double dog in the center of the fryer tray. Place the tray back into the air fryer and cook for 8 minutes. Check the bacon at around 6 minutes to ensure it is not overcooked!

Step Four: While the double dog and bacon cook, chop up ½ of the fresh purple onion and set it aside. Next, add the chili to a microwave-safe bowl, and following the manufacturer instructions, heat the chili until it is warm throughout.

On the toasted bun, spread the heated chili on both sides of the bun. When the double dog has finished cooking, remove it from the air fryer and set it in the middle of the bun. Top the bacon double dog with a line of chili. Next, in a crossing motion, top the bacon double-dog and both sides of the bun with yellow mustard to your exact taste! After adding the mustard, it is time to add the freshly chopped onion! Add the chopped onion to the top of the double-dog and both sides of the bun to your personal satisfaction. For the grand finale, we will now top our new creation with a heavy helping of fresh coleslaw!

Air Fryer Carolina Style Hot Dogs Recipe Tips

  • Red Onions: Sprinkle a little bit more of the fresh chopped onion on top of your bacon Wrapped Carolina Double Dog…the purple will make your presentation pop.

  • Flipping: Depending on the air fryer you are using, you may need to flip your hot dogs halfway during cooking.
  • Making These In An Air Fryer Oven: If you are making this recipe in an air fryer oven, make sure that you use the bottom shelf so both the outside and inside get cooked to perfection.
