Ingredients Needed for Air Fryer Apple Crisp Recipe
Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.
- Apples: Crisp and tart apples are the best apples for this recipe. They provide a sweet and juicy base for the crisp topping, the perfect complement to the crunchy topping and warm spices.
- Cinnamon: Warm and aromatic cinnamon adds a cozy flavor to the apple filling, infusing each bite with a hint of spice that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the fruit.
- Lemon Juice: Adds some acid and keeps the coloring of the apples.
- Rolled Oats: Rolled oats form the base of the crisp topping, adding a satisfying crunch and nutty flavor that contrasts beautifully with the tender apples underneath.
- All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour helps thicken the apple filling as it cooks, creating a luscious and syrupy texture that coats the apples and enhances their natural sweetness.
- Brown Sugar: Brown sugar adds rich, caramel notes to the crisp topping, creating a deliciously crunchy, sweet layer that’s impossible to resist.
- Butter: Butter binds the crisp topping together, creating clusters of oats and brown sugar that become golden and crispy as they cook in the air fryer, adding irresistible texture to the dessert.
How to Make Apple Crisp in the Air Fryer
Here are the step-by-step instructions:
Step One: In a small bowl, combine the apples, cinnamon, lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons of brown sugar.
Step Two: Scoop into ramekins until ¾ full. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, and the remaining brown sugar. Add the butter and work it into the flour until it resembles coarse sand.
Step Three: Top the apple with the crumble and take it to the air fryer. Set cook time for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees F.
Substitutions and Variations
- Apples: Peaches, pears, or blueberries can be great substitutes. You could also try a mix of berries or stone fruits for a unique flavor profile.
- Cinnamon: Try nutmeg, allspice, or apple pie spice for a different warm flavor. Cardamom could also add an interesting twist.
- Lemon juice: Orange juice or apple cider vinegar can be used instead to prevent browning and add acidity.
- Rolled oats: Quick oats can work in a pinch, or you could use a mixture of oats and chopped nuts for extra crunch.
- All-purpose flour: For a gluten-free version, use almond flour, oat flour, or a gluten-free flour blend.
- Brown sugar: Coconut sugar, maple syrup, or honey can be used as alternatives. Each will bring a unique flavor to the dish.
Additions:
- Nuts: Chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds can add extra crunch and flavor to the topping mixture.
- Dried fruit: Raisins, cranberries, or chopped dried apricots can add interesting texture and concentrated fruit flavor.
- Vanilla extract: A teaspoon of vanilla in the apple mixture can enhance the overall flavor.
- Ginger: Fresh grated ginger or ground ginger can add a spicy kick to complement the apples.
- Lemon or orange zest: This can brighten the flavor profile of the dessert.
- Sea salt: A pinch in the topping can balance the sweetness and enhance all the flavors.
- Granola: Adding some to the topping can increase the crunch factor.
Apple Crisp Recipe Tips
- Choose the Right Apples: Use firm, tart like Granny Smith apples or Honeycrisp for the best texture and flavor in your apple crisp. These juicy apples hold their shape well during cooking and provide a nice contrast to the sweet topping for the best results.
- Slice Evenly: Try to slice your apples into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking. Even apple slices will help prevent some pieces from becoming too soft while others remain firm.
- Adjust Sweetness: Taste your apple mixture before adding sugar to determine how sweet it is. Depending on the sweetness of your apples and personal preference, you may need to adjust the amount of sugar added.
- Prevent Soggy Crisp: To avoid a soggy bottom crust, sprinkle a thin layer of breadcrumbs or crushed graham crackers on the bottom of the ramekins before adding the apple mixture. This helps absorb excess moisture from the apples as they bake.
- Mix Up the Topping: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your crispy topping! Experiment with different combinations of oats, flour, sugar, and spices until you find your perfect mix. Adding nuts or shredded coconut can also add extra flavor and crunch.
- Use Ramekins or Oven-Safe Dishes: Individual ramekins or oven-safe dishes are ideal for baking individual servings of apple crisp. They allow for even cooking and make for a beautiful presentation when serving.
How to Store Apple Crisp
Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 days. To prevent the pastry from going soggy, put it in an airtight container without cream or ice cream.
While apple crisp is best enjoyed fresh from the air fryer, you can prepare it ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator before baking. Simply cover the assembled ramekins with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator, preheat the air fryer, and bake as directed.
You can freeze any leftover apple crisp for later enjoyment. Allow the crisp to cool completely, then transfer individual portions or the entire dish to an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. It will keep well in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to eat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the air fryer or oven until warmed through.
Serving Suggestions
When serving a delicious apple crisp, consider pairing it with more than just the traditional cream or scoop of vanilla ice cream. A drizzle of warm caramel sauce can add a luxurious touch, while a dollop of lightly sweetened whipped mascarpone offers a creamy, less sweet alternative.
To create a well-rounded dessert spread for a party, consider serving apple crisp alongside complementary dishes that offer varied flavors and textures. A classic pumpkin pie makes an excellent companion, sharing similar warm spice notes while providing a different texture. For chocolate lovers, a rich chocolate mousse can provide a delightful contrast to the fruity crisp.
