Air Fryer Liverwurst Livermush — I know, I know. Liverwurst and livermush are two words that make most people cringe; how could they not?
They’re both foods made from pig’s livers (and other ingredients) that aren’t exactly the easiest to swallow. But there is a way you can enjoy both of these meats without having to worry about what your taste buds will think later on down the line: an air fryer! In this guide, I’ll show you how to cook some delicious fried liver in just minutes with your Philips Air Fryer!.
If you are not familiar with liverwurst, it is a meat sausage, and you will find the grocery aisle in it with the other processed meats.
While I was researching this, someone asked me if it was the same as livermush, a North Carolina delicacy. What I did find is that they are both essentially the same thing. They are both liver puddings, made from pork liver, head (cheek) pieces, and seasonings. Mush is the Carolina term for the same liverwurst.
What Is Liverwurst?
Liverwurst, also known as liver sausage, is a type of sausage made primarily from liver and other organ meats. It is commonly enjoyed in various European cuisines, particularly in Germany and other Central and Eastern European countries.
Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Liverwurst
Here are the simple ingredients, you need to make a batch of liverwurst in the air fryer:
Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list below in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post and the nutritional information.
- Liverwurst Sausage: Choose high-quality liverwurst, either store-bought or homemade, to ensure a rich and flavorful base for your dish.
- Olive Oil or Cooking Spray: A light coating helps to achieve a crisp exterior on the liverwurst while preventing sticking.
- Spices (optional): Consider using black pepper, garlic powder, or paprika to enhance the flavor profile of the liverwurst.
- Herbs (optional): Fresh or dried herbs like thyme or parsley can add a fragrant touch and extra depth of flavor.
- Onions (optional): Thinly sliced onions can be air fried alongside the liverwurst for added sweetness and texture.
How To Cook Livermush In Air Fryer
There are several ways to make liverwurst or livermush, but today we are talking about making it in the air fryer.
This is the roll that I purchased, unwrap, and place on a cutting board.
Start by cutting the liverwurst into slices, about 1/2 inch thick. Then preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees F for 5 minutes, air fryer setting.
Set your liverwurst (livermush) into the air fryer, and set the timer to 5 minutes. Flip halfway during the cooking process.
Pro Tips For Cooking Liverwurst In Air Fryer
- Use Cooking Spray: Lightly coat the liverwurst slices or pieces with cooking spray or a small amount of oil to prevent sticking and to help them crisp up.
- Cut Uniformly: Slice the liverwurst into even pieces to ensure consistent cooking. Thicker slices will need more time, while thinner slices will cook faster.
- Single Layer Arrangement: Arrange the liverwurst in a single layer in the air fryer basket to allow for proper air circulation and even cooking. Avoid overcrowding.
- Monitor Closely: Liverwurst can cook quickly in an air fryer. Check frequently to avoid overcooking, which can lead to dryness.
- Flip Halfway: For even browning, flip the liverwurst pieces halfway through the cooking time. This helps achieve a uniform crispy texture on all sides.
- Temperature Control: Start with a lower temperature (around 350°F or 175°C) and increase if needed. High temperatures can cause the liverwurst to cook too quickly on the outside while remaining undercooked inside.
- Experiment with Spices: Sprinkle additional spices or herbs on the liverwurst before air frying to enhance the flavor. Black pepper, garlic powder, or smoked paprika work well.
- Serve Immediately: For the best taste and texture, serve the liverwurst hot and fresh from the air fryer.
- Pair with Sides: Enhance your meal by serving air-fried liverwurst with complementary sides like crusty bread, mustard, pickles, or a fresh salad.
What is it made of?
Liverwurst is made out of meat, organ meat, and fat. The meat can either be pork or beef. Of course, the organ is the liver, but some products will also include the heart or kidneys.
Livermush is made from almost the same ingredients as Scrapple, and it includes pork liver, cornmeal, and some seasonings (which will vary based on the manufacturer).
What does it taste like?
Livermush tastes like a sausage patty; the usual seasonings are sage and black pepper, so you can really taste many meat spices. Livermush is almost the same as Liver Pudding, but depending on where you live in the United States, the name will differ.
Liverwurst is a real blood sausage; it tastes almost like a pate. It definitely has the blood sausage taste.
How do you serve it?
The typical way to serve liverwurst is in a liverwurst sandwich, which can be served at breakfast or lunchtime.
It is typically eaten the same way that breakfast sausage is eaten, next to a great big pile of scrambled eggs.
Can you eat it raw?
Since the label (above) says that it is fully cooked, you can slice and eat it without cooking it.
