How To Make Chicken and Stuffing Casserole In Air Fryer
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare this dish:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, add soup, milk, chicken, kosher salt, and black pepper, and mix well. Spread the mixture into a deep casserole dish that fits into your air fryer.
Cook in the air fryer, covered with aluminum foil, at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, cook 4 tablespoons of butter, onions, and celery over medium heat on the stovetop. Cook until the vegetables are softened and translucent (about 8 minutes).
Add the contents of the stuffing package to the skillet. Pour water over the stuffing and stir to mix everything together.
Remove the soup mixture from the air fryer and stir to distribute the heat evenly. Top with the prepared stuffing/vegetable mixture.
Return the casserole dish to the air fryer and cook, uncovered, for an additional 10-15 minutes. Casserole is done when it is heated through, and the top is browned. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and drizzle over top, if desired.
Air Fryer Chicken and Stuffing Casserole Recipe Notes
- Swap in cream of celery or cream of mushroom soup for the cream of chicken soup. Do not thin the condensed soup mixture – use the can of soup as is and the ingredients listed in the recipe.
- Brushing the top of the finished stuffing with melted butter isn’t necessary, but it adds a bit of flavor and moisture while the stuffing stays crispy on top. It also adds a nice glisten.
- We like Stove Top stuffing for its flavor and easy preparation, you can use leftover homemade stuffing or your favorite packaged stuffing.
- Adding the onions and celery to the stuffing mixture adds flavor and makes the stuffing a little bit lighter. It’s optional and can be omitted.
- Sometimes it takes a while to heat dishes through in the air fryer when using deep dishes. Cover with aluminum foil so the top of the creamy chicken mixture doesn’t dry out. Stir to redistribute the heat before adding the stuffing on top of the dish. Doing it this way gives you a jump start on heating up the dish while you’re taking the time to saute the vegetables and get the stuffing prepared.
Pro Tips For Air Fryer Chicken and Stuffing Casserole Recipe
- Pre-Cook Chicken for Even Cooking: If your chicken breasts are thick, consider pre-cooking them slightly before adding them to the casserole. This ensures that the chicken cooks evenly without overcooking the other components.
- Dry Stuffing for Crispiness: Ensure your stuffing mix is not overly moist before adding it to the casserole. A drier stuffing will absorb the flavors better and become more crispy in the air fryer.
- Layer Strategically: Start with a layer of chicken, followed by your vegetables, and then the stuffing mix on top. This order helps each layer maintain its texture and flavor.
- Check Temperature: Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). This is crucial for food safety.
- Rest Before Serving: Let the casserole rest for a few minutes after cooking. This allows the flavors to meld together and makes the casserole easier to serve.
- Add Freshness with Garnishes: Just before serving, add a garnish of fresh herbs like parsley or chives.
- Customize to Your Preference: Don’t hesitate to modify the recipe based on your taste preferences. Adding different herbs, spices, or vegetables can make this dish uniquely yours.
- Use the Right Dish: If your air fryer requires a separate dish or pan for casseroles, use one that conducts heat well and fits comfortably inside the fryer basket.
