- Genoa Salami: Salty, cured Italian meat sliced very thin.
- Provolone Cheese: Mild, creamy cheese that melts perfectly when baked.

- Olive Oil Blend: Golden oil that soaks flavor into the bread.
- Dried Oregano: Fragrant herb that adds a classic Mediterranean aroma.
How To Make Easy Jason’s Deli Muffuletta Sandwich

Step One: For the best results, make this at least 2 hours ahead (or even the night before) so the oil can marinate the vegetables. Combine the pimento-stuffed green olives, black olives, giardiniera, garlic, oregano, and extra-virgin olive oil.
Step Two: Use a large, round Italian loaf or a sourdough boule. Cut the loaf horizontally. Jason’s Deli uses bread that is crusty on the outside but soft enough to soak up the olive oil. Apply a generous layer of the olive salad (and its oil) to both sides of the bread.

Step Three: Stack your ingredients in this order on the bottom half of the loaf: Ham, Salami, Cheese, and Place the other half of the bread on top.
Step Four: Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil. This traps the steam, which softens the meats and helps the cheese “marry” with the bread. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15–20 minutes. Remove from the oven, unwrap, and let it sit for 2 minutes before slicing into wedges.

Easy Jason’s Deli Muffuletta Recipe Tips
- The “Weight” Trick: After assembling and wrapping the sandwich, place a heavy object (like a cast-iron skillet or a couple of heavy cans on a baking sheet) on top for about 30 minutes. This compresses the layers and helps the olive oil penetrate the bread without making it mushy.+1
- The Cheese Barrier: To prevent the bread from getting too soggy, place a layer of cheese directly against the bread before adding the olive salad. The fat in the cheese acts as a moisture barrier.
- The Olive Oil “Liquid Gold”: Don’t drain all the oil from your olive salad! That seasoned oil is what gives the bread its iconic flavor and signature “soft-crunch” texture.
- Slice with a Serrated Knife: Always use a long serrated (bread) knife to cut the sandwich into wedges. This prevents the fillings from squishing out the sides.
Storing Instructions
- Refrigeration: Wrap leftovers tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3–5 days. In fact, many people think it tastes better on day two!
- Freezing: You can freeze a Muffuletta! Wrap individual wedges tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag. They will last for up to 2 months.
- Reheating: Keep it in the foil and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 10–12 minutes. This restores the melty cheese and warms the meat through.

Easy Jason’s Deli Muffuletta Recipe Faqs
What makes Jason’s Deli Muffuletta different from the New Orleans original? The primary difference is the temperature. While the New Orleans original (from Central Grocery) is typically served cold or at room temperature on very dense bread, the Jason’s Deli version is famously served warm and toasted with melted cheese and a softer bread texture.
Can I make this sandwich ahead of time? Yes! In fact, it’s encouraged. Making the sandwich a few hours early allows the olive salad juices to soak into the bread. For the best results, assemble it, wrap it in foil, and refrigerate. Just pop it in the oven when you’re ready to serve.
What is the best bread to use if I can’t find Muffuletta bread? Look for a large round sourdough loaf or a Ciabatta boule. You want a bread that has a sturdy crust but an airy, porous interior that can absorb the olive oil without falling apart.
Is the olive salad spicy? It has a “tangy” kick rather than heat. The spice level depends on the giardiniera you use. If you prefer a spicier sandwich, look for a “hot” giardiniera variety or add extra red pepper flakes to your olive mix.
How do I prevent the sandwich from getting soggy? The key is the cheese barrier. Place your slices of provolone directly against the bread halves before adding the olive salad. The cheese acts as a waterproof layer, keeping the bread moist from the oil but preventing it from becoming mushy.
What should I serve with a Muffuletta? To keep it “Deli-style,” serve it with Zapp’s Voodoo Chips, a side of potato salad, or a simple cup of tomato basil soup.
