This copycat Hardee’s BBQ sauce is the thick, sweet, slightly smoky dipping sauce that comes in the little cup with your Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders. Hardee’s calls it Sweet & Bold BBQ, and it takes 10 minutes and one saucepan to make at home.

I started with the BBQ sauce from my Copycat Western Bacon Cheeseburger and thickened it up for dipping, with more molasses and a little black pepper and cayenne for the “bold” part. It clings to a tender instead of running off, and it tastes like the drive-thru cup, not like bottled hickory sauce.

If you’re building a full Hardee’s sauce lineup for a tender platter, pair it with my Hardee’s Honey Mustard. Those two are the sauces people fight over.

What Does Hardee’s BBQ Sauce Taste Like?

Sweet first, then tangy, then a low smoky finish with a tickle of pepper. It’s thicker and sweeter than the sauce on the Western Bacon Cheeseburger, and it’s closer to a Kansas City-style sauce than a Carolina vinegar sauce. A single dipping cup is about 50 calories and 13 g of carbs with 5 g of sugar, 0 g fat, and 190 mg sodium (Nutrola, Eat This Much), which tells you it’s a ketchup-and-sugar sauce with no butter or oil in it.

Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. share the same dipping sauces, so this works for both. In spring 2026 Hardee’s also added Duke’s Carolina Gold BBQ as a limited-time dipping option (Hardee’s); that’s a mustard sauce, and my Carolina Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce is the one to make if that’s what you’re after.

Hardee’s BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Everything here is a pantry staple. Makes about 1¼ cups, or 10 dipping cups’ worth.

Ingredients for copycat Hardee’s BBQ sauce including ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, vinegar, and spices
  • Ketchup: the base; it’s already seasoned, tangy, and the right color.
  • Dark brown sugar: the “sweet” in Sweet & Bold.
  • Molasses: deep color, body, and the slightly bitter edge that keeps it from tasting like candy.
  • Apple cider vinegar: tang to cut the sugar.
  • Worcestershire sauce: savory depth.
  • Yellow mustard: a small amount sharpens the sauce without tasting mustardy.
  • Smoked paprika: smoke and a red tint.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder: rounded-out flavor with no raw bite.
  • Black pepper and cayenne: the “bold” part; it’s a warm finish, not hot.
  • Liquid smoke (hickory): half a teaspoon gives it the charbroiled note; don’t skip it.
  • Water: just enough to let it simmer without scorching; it thickens back up as it cools.

Ingredient notes

  • Dark brown sugar plus molasses is what makes it taste like the restaurant cup. Light brown sugar alone comes out pale and thin.
  • Use plain ketchup, not “no sugar added.” The sauce is balanced around regular ketchup.
  • If you don’t have liquid smoke, double the smoked paprika. It won’t be identical, but it’s close.

How to Make Copycat Hardee’s BBQ Sauce

Whisking ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, and spices together in a small saucepan

Step 1: Whisk everything together. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire, mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne, liquid smoke, and water to a small saucepan. Whisk until the sugar is wet and there are no streaks of molasses.

Step 2: Simmer. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then drop to low. Cook 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce darkens a shade and coats the back of a spoon. It will spit a little; keep the heat low and stir.

Step 3: Taste and adjust. Sweeter: another teaspoon of brown sugar. Tangier: a teaspoon of vinegar. Bolder: a pinch more black pepper or cayenne.

Step 4: Cool. Pour into a jar and let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. The sauce thickens as it cools and tastes best after a few hours in the fridge.

That’s it. No blender, no straining. If you’d rather not turn on the stove, microwave it in a bowl in 45-second bursts, stirring between each, for about 3 minutes total.

Variations

  • Honey Q sauce: Carl’s Jr.’s old Honey Q dipping sauce was this sauce leaning sweet. Swap the brown sugar for ¼ cup honey and skip the cayenne.
  • Spicy BBQ: stir in 1 teaspoon chipotle powder or 1 tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce after simmering.
  • Extra smoky: add another ¼ teaspoon liquid smoke and ½ teaspoon smoked paprika.
  • Carolina Gold style: for the Duke’s-style mustard BBQ Hardee’s ran as a special, use my Carolina Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce instead.
  • Burger sauce: thin it with 2 tablespoons of water and cut the molasses in half to get the thinner, tangier sauce on the Western Bacon Cheeseburger.
  • BBQ ranch: whisk 2 tablespoons of this sauce into ½ cup ranch for a creamy dip.

What to Dip in Hardee’s BBQ Sauce

Storage

  • Refrigerator: 3 weeks in a sealed jar. Stir before using; it may separate slightly.
  • Freezer: up to 3 months in an ice cube tray, then bagged. Two cubes make one dipping cup.
  • Make ahead: the flavor is better on day two, so make it the night before a tender platter.

Tips for the Best Copycat

  • Keep the heat low once it simmers. Sugar scorches fast in a thin layer of sauce; low heat and a whisk keep it glossy.
  • Don’t over-reduce. Pull it when it coats a spoon. It thickens a lot as it cools, and an over-reduced sauce turns to paste in the fridge.
  • Measure the liquid smoke. Half a teaspoon is right; a full teaspoon tastes like an ashtray.
  • Double it. It keeps 3 weeks, and you’ll use it on everything from meatballs to pizza crust.

Hardee’s BBQ Sauce FAQs

What dipping sauces does Hardee’s have? Honey Mustard, Buttermilk Ranch, Sweet & Bold BBQ, Creamy Buffalo, and Sweet & Sour, plus limited-time sauces like Duke’s Carolina Gold BBQ. Carl’s Jr. offers the same lineup.

What is the best sauce for Hardee’s chicken tenders? Honey mustard is the fan favorite, with BBQ a close second. Order both and mix them; it’s a well-known trick.

Is Hardee’s BBQ sauce spicy? No. “Bold” means peppery and smoky, not hot. The cayenne in this recipe is a quarter teaspoon for 1¼ cups, barely noticeable. Leave it out if you’re serving kids.

How many calories are in Hardee’s BBQ sauce? About 50 calories and 13 g carbs per dipping cup. This copycat is about 45 calories per 2 tablespoons.

Can I buy Hardee’s BBQ sauce in stores? No. Hardee’s doesn’t bottle its dipping sauces, which is why a copycat is the only way to keep it at home.

Is this gluten-free? Check the Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke labels; Lea & Perrins and Wright’s are both gluten-free in the US. Everything else is naturally gluten-free.

Is the Western Bacon Cheeseburger sauce the same? Same family, different consistency. The burger sauce is thinner and tangier so it soaks into the bun; the dipping sauce is thicker and sweeter so it clings to a tender. See the variation above to turn one into the other.
