If you have ever ordered a cinnamon sugar pretzel at Auntie Anne’s and paid extra for that little cup of cream cheese dip, this recipe gets you the same flavor for pennies. It tastes just like the original: sweet but tangy, light but rich, and smooth enough to scoop with a soft pretzel without tearing it. Pair it with my Soft Pretzel Recipe (Copycat Auntie Anne’s Pretzels) and you have the full mall experience at home. Want the savory version too? My Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cheese Dip Recipe is the cheddar one.

Why You Will Love This Recipe!

  • Tastes like the real thing: Sweet, tangy, and fluffy, exactly like the cup you get at the mall.
  • 4 ingredients, 5 minutes: Cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla. No cooking.
  • Cheaper than the mall: One batch makes enough for a whole family of pretzels for less than one dip cup.
  • Make-ahead friendly: It keeps in the fridge for a week and whips back up in seconds.
  • Works with more than pretzels: Apple slices, graham crackers, cinnamon sugar chips, strawberries, even as a frosting.

Ingredients Needed For Auntie Anne’s Cream Cheese Dip

Ingredients for Auntie Anne's cream cheese dip: cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt on a kitchen table
  • Cream cheese: 4 ounces (half a block), softened to room temperature. Use full-fat block cream cheese for the thickest, smoothest dip. If you like making your own, my Easy Homemade Instant Pot Cream Cheese works here too.
  • Butter: 2 tablespoons unsalted, softened. This is what gives the dip its fluffy, frosting-like body.
  • Powdered sugar: 1 cup, sifted if lumpy. Granulated sugar will leave the dip gritty, so stick with powdered.
  • Vanilla extract: 1/2 teaspoon. Pure vanilla tastes closest to the original.
  • Pinch of salt: Balances the sweetness and brings out the cream cheese tang.
  • Milk (optional): 1 to 2 teaspoons if you want it a little looser for dipping.

How To Make Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cream Cheese Dip

Softened cream cheese and butter in a mixing bowl ready to beat for sweet pretzel dip

Step 1: Soften the cream cheese and butter. Let both sit on the counter for about 30 minutes, or microwave the cream cheese for 15 seconds. Cold cream cheese is what makes this dip lumpy.

Step 2: Beat them together. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter with a hand mixer on medium for 1 to 2 minutes until completely smooth and fluffy.

Step 3: Add the sugar. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time with the mixer on low so it does not fly everywhere, then turn it up to medium and beat for another minute.

Step 4: Flavor it. Beat in the vanilla and the pinch of salt. If the dip is thicker than you like, add milk 1 teaspoon at a time.

Step 5: Serve. Scoop into a small bowl and serve right away with warm pretzels, or chill until you need it.

Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cream Cheese Dip Recipe Tips

  • Room temperature is everything. Softened cream cheese and butter are the difference between silky and lumpy.
  • Beat it longer than you think. Two full minutes of mixing is what makes it light and fluffy like the original instead of dense like frosting.
  • Sift the powdered sugar if it has clumps; they will not beat out.
  • Taste before you add more sugar. The mall version is sweet but still tangy. If you lose the tang, you have gone too far.
  • Serve it at room temperature. Straight from the fridge it is stiff; 15 minutes on the counter brings it back to dipping consistency.
  • Full-fat only. Light cream cheese makes a thin, runny dip.

Variations

  • Cinnamon cream cheese dip: Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. This is the one to make for cinnamon sugar pretzel bites.
  • Maple cream cheese dip: Swap the vanilla for 1/2 teaspoon maple extract, or stir in 1 tablespoon real maple syrup.
  • Strawberry cream cheese dip: Beat in 2 tablespoons strawberry jam, then a drop of milk if needed.
  • Chocolate cream cheese dip: Add 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 extra tablespoon powdered sugar.
  • Pumpkin spice: Stir in 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree and 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice for fall.
  • Lemon: Add 1 teaspoon lemon zest and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice for a brighter, cheesecake-style dip.
  • Extra fluffy: Fold in 1/4 cup whipped topping at the end for a lighter, mousse-like texture.

What To Serve With Auntie Anne’s Cream Cheese Dip

This is a sweet dip, so it shines with warm pretzels and anything cinnamon sugar. These are the recipes I pair it with most:

Setting out a pretzel bar? Put this sweet dip next to the savory Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cheese Dip Recipe or Beer Cheese Dip for Pretzels so guests can go sweet or salty.

How To Store Cream Cheese Dip

  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 7 days. Let it sit out for 15 minutes and give it a quick stir (or a few seconds with the mixer) before serving.
  • Make ahead: Mix it up to 3 days before a party. It firms up in the fridge and softens back to dipping texture on the counter.
  • Freezer: You can freeze it for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and re-whip with a mixer; it will be slightly less fluffy than fresh.
  • Food safety: Because it contains cream cheese and butter, do not leave it out longer than 2 hours.

Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cream Cheese Dip Recipe FAQs

What is Auntie Anne’s cream cheese dip made of? The mall version is a sweetened cream cheese dip, essentially a light cream cheese frosting. This copycat uses cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla to match it.

Is Auntie Anne’s cream cheese dip sweet or savory? Sweet. It is sold alongside the cinnamon sugar pretzels. For the savory cheddar dip, use my Copycat Auntie Anne’s Cheese Dip Recipe.

Why is my dip lumpy? The cream cheese or butter was too cold. Let the bowl warm up for 10 minutes and beat it again.

Why is my dip runny? Usually whipped or low-fat cream cheese, or too much milk. Beat in powdered sugar 1 tablespoon at a time, or chill it for 20 minutes to firm up.

Can I make it without a mixer? Yes. Make sure everything is very soft, then stir hard with a spatula for 3 to 4 minutes. It will be a little denser but still delicious.

Can I make it dairy-free? Use plant-based cream cheese and vegan butter. The texture is softer, so you may need a little extra powdered sugar.

Can I use it as frosting? Absolutely. It is the right consistency for cinnamon rolls, graham cracker sandwiches, or a quick cupcake frosting.

How much does this make? About 3/4 cup, enough for 8 to 10 pretzels or a batch of pretzel bites. Double it for a party.
