A frozen mudslide is the drink the Ninja Slushi was built for: vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, chocolate, and enough dairy to taste like a milkshake that grew up. It is also the drink people most often ruin on this machine — because a mudslide poured the way you’d pour it over ice is far too boozy to ever turn into slush.

Here is the version that works, plus the two numbers that decide whether your batch freezes or spins for an hour and hands you a cold brown puddle.
Short answer: Use the Spiked Slush preset (SlushAssist on the Max and XXL), keep the finished mix around 7–8% ABV, and make sure there’s real sugar in there — the chocolate syrup and the liqueurs do that job. Full recipe below.

Why Mudslides Fail in the Ninja Slushi
The Slushi doesn’t blend ice. There’s no blade at all. A compressor chills a metal cylinder below freezing while an auger scrapes liquid across it until the whole batch turns to slush — which means the chemistry of what you pour in decides everything. Our full guide to how the Ninja Slushi works covers the mechanics, but two limits matter for this drink specifically.
Alcohol. On the Spiked Slush preset, the finished mix needs to land between 2.8% and 16% ABV. Alcohol lowers the freezing point, and above that ceiling the machine physically cannot get the liquid cold enough to form crystals. A classic bar mudslide — 1½ oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlúa, 1 oz Baileys, splash of cream — sits somewhere near 20%. Scale that up and pour it in and nothing happens. This is the same constraint that shapes our Ninja Slushi margarita: every good frozen cocktail on this machine is built to a target ABV instead of to taste.
Sugar. The machine needs roughly 4–5 grams of sugar per 100 ml as a floor, and the texture gets noticeably silkier closer to 12–15%. Cut the chocolate syrup to be “healthier” and you’ll trip the low-sugar alert.
And use the right button. Plain Slush stops at a temperature that leaves any spiked drink liquid — the single most common preset mistake owners make. If you’re unsure which program does what, the preset breakdown is worth two minutes.
Ninja Slushi Frozen Mudslide Recipe

- Vodka: Carries the alcohol without competing with the coffee and chocolate. Swaps: vanilla, espresso, or whipped cream vodka; peanut butter whiskey. Don’t go past 1¼ cups — that’s the ABV ceiling.
- Coffee liqueur: Color, roasted depth, and a big share of the sugar. Swaps: Kahlúa (standard), Mr. Black (drier), Tia Maria. With a low-sugar brand, add 2 tbsp simple syrup.
- Irish cream: The vanilla-and-cocoa note that separates a mudslide from a frozen White Russian. Swaps: Carolans, salted caramel or espresso Baileys, Baileys Almande for dairy-free.
- Whole milk: Dilutes the batch into freezable range. Swaps: 2% for a lighter body, barista oat milk for dairy-free. Skim comes out icy.
- Half-and-half: Fat is what makes it velvety instead of grainy. Swaps: heavy cream for thicker, full-fat coconut cream for dairy-free. Don’t skip it.
- Chocolate syrup: The main sugar source — the machine needs it to form slush. Swaps: homemade (simmer 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, ½ cup cocoa for 5 minutes), or half caramel for a salted caramel version. No sugar-free.
- Cold brew or cold water: Volume. Cold brew deepens the coffee note for free, the same trick behind our mocha frappé. Swaps: chilled brewed coffee, or water for a more chocolate-forward drink.
- Simple syrup: Insurance against the low-sugar alert. Swaps: 2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk.
- Garnish: Chocolate syrup in the glass, whipped cream, shaved chocolate.
How To Make Ninja Slushi Frozen Mudslide

Step 1: Chill everything first. Cold ingredients roughly halve the cycle time. Start at room temperature and you’re looking at the long end of the range.
Step 2: Mix in a pitcher, not in the machine. Whisk the chocolate syrup into the milk and half-and-half until there are no dark streaks left at the bottom. Undissolved syrup means uneven sugar and a batch that never quite sets. Add the vodka, liqueurs, and cold brew, then stir another 30 seconds.

Step 3: Pour through the fill port, staying between the min and max fill lines. Below the minimum, the auger can’t circulate properly. Press Spiked Slush. On the SLUSHi Max or XXL, use SlushAssist and let it find the target temperature.
Step 4: Wait 20–40 minutes, lid closed. Dispense into a chocolate-drizzled glass and top with whipped cream.

The Numbers, For Anyone Who Tinkers
This batch finishes near 7.8% ABV — comfortably inside the Spiked Slush window with room to spare — and works out to about one standard drink per 8 oz serving. Sugar lands around 14–15 g per 100 ml, right where the texture turns velvety instead of grainy.
Want it stronger? You have roughly 2 oz of vodka in headroom. Add much beyond that and you’re watching a slow-motion failure.
Tips for the Creamiest Texture
- Half-and-half is the sweet spot. Whole milk alone comes out thin. Heavy cream alone freezes stiff and slightly buttery. The blend gives you milkshake body that still dispenses cleanly.
- Use the thickness dial. The temperature control on the side is what separates a pourable mudslide from a spoon-standing one. Start mid-range and adjust colder for thicker.
- Cold brew instead of water deepens the coffee note without adding sugar or alcohol. If you like that direction, the same trick carries our Ninja Slushi mocha frappé.
- Serve dairy batches the same day. Non-alcoholic slush can hold in the machine for hours; a cream-based one should be treated like any other milk drink.
- Rinse immediately. Chocolate syrup and cream are the two things that dry hardest onto the auger.

Troubleshooting
Cold, but it never turned to slush. Almost always too much alcohol. Add 3 tablespoons of water per 8 oz serving to pull the ABV down, then restart the program. Also confirm you pressed Spiked Slush and not plain Slush.
Low-sugar alert. Not enough dissolved sugar. Stir in more chocolate syrup or 2–3 tablespoons of simple syrup. Sugar-free syrups won’t fix it — they don’t depress the freezing point the same way.
Grainy or icy instead of creamy. Usually under-mixed syrup or not enough fat. Whisk more thoroughly and don’t drop below the half-and-half.
It’s taking forever. Room-temperature liquid and a full vessel both stretch the cycle. Fifteen to sixty minutes is normal.
Variations
- Frozen banana mudslide — blend half a banana completely smooth and whisk it in. Never add fruit chunks; they jam the auger. (This is why the mango margarita calls for nectar or purée rather than fresh fruit.)
- Peppermint mudslide — swap 2 oz of the vodka for peppermint schnapps and garnish with crushed candy cane.
- Salted caramel mudslide — replace half the chocolate syrup with caramel and add a pinch of flaky salt to the pitcher.
- Dairy-free — oat milk plus coconut cream and a dairy-free Irish cream. Slightly looser, still very good.
- Skip the chocolate entirely and you’re most of the way to a frozen White Russian, which uses the same vodka-and-coffee-liqueur backbone with a cleaner finish.
- Mocktail mudslide — drop the alcohol, use strong cold brew and a splash of vanilla, and run plain Slush instead.

FAQ
Which Ninja Slushi preset for a mudslide? Spiked Slush on the FS300 and FS301 models, SlushAssist on the SLUSHi Max and XXL. Plain Slush won’t get cold enough for an alcoholic mix.
Can you put milk and cream in a Ninja Slushi? Yes — this recipe is mostly dairy. Just serve it and clean the vessel promptly rather than leaving a cream-based batch sitting for hours.
How much alcohol is too much? The finished mix has to stay under 16% ABV on the original Slushi. Around 8% is the reliable target for both freeze quality and flavor.
Can I use ice cream instead of milk? Melted vanilla ice cream works and adds fat and sugar, but it makes the sugar load harder to predict. If you go that way, cut the chocolate syrup to ½ cup.
How long does it take? Twenty to forty minutes with chilled ingredients, up to an hour from room temperature.
Can I make it ahead? Mix the base and refrigerate up to 24 hours. Pouring it in cold noticeably shortens the cycle.
