Everyone’s favorite thing to make in the air fryer is bacon, so today, I elevated my very popular Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich to include a few treats, mainly the bacon, ham, and of course, tomatoes! If you love tomatoes in your grilled cheese, this is a great and easy recipe.

They call this an adult grilled cheese, but I personally think everyone young and old will love this!! Who really doesn’t love a sandwich that is grilled (air fried) and stuffed to the brim?

Best yet, this recipe is so simple. The kids completely went nuts over it; they loved it better than my Air Fryer Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (and they love that)!!

Air Fryer Bacon Grilled Cheese Recipe Tips

  • Use Sturdy Bread: Use hearty bread like sourdough or thick-cut whole wheat to prevent sogginess and ensure a crisp texture.
  • Apply Even Mayo: Spread a thin, even layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the bread slices to promote a golden, crispy crust.
  • Layer Ingredients Well: Place the cheese directly on the bread, followed by the bacon, smoked ham, and tomato. This helps the cheese melt evenly and the bacon stay crispy.
  • Don’t Overstuff: Be careful not to overload the sandwich with fillings; too much can lead to uneven cooking and a mess in the air fryer.
  • Flip Carefully: If your air fryer doesn’t have a rotating function, flip the sandwich halfway through cooking for even browning.
  • Check for Crispiness: Cooking times can vary; keep an eye on the sandwich and remove it when the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Let It Cool Slightly: Allow the sandwich to cool for a minute or two before cutting, as this helps the cheese set and makes it easier to slice.
  • Experiment with Cheese: Try different cheeses like sharp cheddar or Swiss for varied flavors and textures.
  • Season to Taste: Add a sprinkle of salt, pepper, or your favorite herbs to enhance the flavor.

Air Fryer Bacon Grilled Cheese Recipe Faqs

Can I use any type of bread for this recipe? Yes, while sourdough is ideal for its sturdiness and flavor, you can use other types of bread such as whole wheat, ciabatta, or even rye. Just ensure the bread is thick enough to hold up to the fillings.

How do I get the bacon crispy? Pre-cook the bacon until crispy before adding it to the sandwich. This helps prevent the sandwich from becoming greasy and ensures the bacon stays crisp.

Can I use pre-cooked bacon? Yes, pre-cooked bacon works well. Just make sure it’s crispy before adding it to the sandwich.

How do I prevent the cheese from oozing out? Use cheese that melts well, such as American or cheddar. Make sure the cheese is evenly distributed and not overstuffed with other ingredients to help keep it contained.

Can I add other ingredients to my grilled cheese? Absolutely! Feel free to add extras like sautéed onions, peppers, or even a layer of pesto for added flavor.

How long should I cook the sandwich? Cook the sandwich for about 7-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. The exact time may vary depending on your air fryer model.

What should I do if the bread is browning too quickly? If the bread is browning too fast, lower the temperature slightly and increase the cooking time. This allows the cheese to melt properly without burning the bread.

Can I use different types of cheese? Yes, you can experiment with different cheeses such as mozzarella, provolone, or gouda for varied flavors and textures.

How do I clean my air fryer after cooking? Allow the air fryer to cool before cleaning. Remove any crumbs or residue from the basket and wipe it down with a damp cloth. For tough residue, use a non-abrasive cleaner and warm, soapy water.
