Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich–Skip the skillet and make this air fryer grilled cheese! It is a cheesy and delicious grilled cheese that has a buttery toasted bread and melted cheese filling. Slice and serve for a snack, dinner, lunch, or even pair with a big bowl of tomato soup.
This might be one of the most delicious things I have ever made. It was one of the easiest dinners I have made thus far in the air fryer. I had my son’s friends over from hockey, so I needed something kid-friendly and easy to make.
And it’s so simple. The kids completely went nuts over it; they loved it better than my Air Fryer Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (and they love that)!!
Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
This is so simple, but it brings back an ancient classic, Grilled Cheese; it tastes like it was almost on a skillet. Even though it is a simple recipe, it is one I recommend trying.
We originally found this classic when my kids were brought my parents to an upscale restaurant, where they had a grilled cheese sandwich for a price tag of over $20. Do you imagine that what is worse is that my son ordered, and my parents went along with it? My oldest son tried it, and he absolutely loved it, so when I got my air fryer, I put it in my list of items to figure how to make it in the Air Fryer.
Why Do They Call It A Grilled Cheese
Essentially it is a cheese sandwich that gets cooked or grilled in a sense. It will be air fried for you and this recipe, which will still provide that crispy bread texture you know and love.
How Do You Make An Air Fryer Grilled Cheese?
Start by spreading mayonnaise or butter to each side of the bread. I like to place my grilled cheese on a trivet. Place one slice of bread (mayo side down) and 2 pieces of cheese on top of the bread.
Put the other slice of bread down. Place 4 toothpicks on each corner of the bread. Set temperature for 400 degrees F for 5 minutes, air fryer setting. Flip and add another 3 minutes.
How Much Cheese To Use For Grilled Cheese
I used two slices of cheddar cheese. Next time, my son mentioned that he wanted to switch that out for Mexican cheese. So, I think that will be coming up.
The trick to getting stuff to stay put during the cooking process, especially bread and light items is a toothpick; here, I put a toothpick in each corner of the bread. It worked wonderfully, and the result was awesome. I also lifted the grilled cheese by placing it on the trivet that I was lucky to get in my air fryer accessory kit, which meat that the mayonnaise did not stick to the air fryer basket. So, each side had a nice coating.
Can You Use Butter To Replace Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise really gives this grilled cheese incredible flavor. But, if you prefer not, go right ahead and reach for butter or a butter replacement. Many people love the slight change in flavor the mayo gives the grilled cheese. It isn’t a huge difference, but it is delicious.
Can I Add Meat To The Sandwich
Want to transform your grilled cheese into a grilled ham and cheese? Or you might want to use up some leftover turkey from the holidays. Go ahead and pile on any of your favorite meats for added flavor to your sandwich.
Does Grilled Cheese Store Well
Unfortunately, no. You will find this sandwich is best served fresh and warm. Otherwise, your sandwich will lose the crispy texture you know and love from this sandwich.
I recommend making these when you want to eat them.

What is the difference between a grilled cheese and a melt?
Grilled cheese and melts are very similar. The biggest difference is a melt tends to have other ingredients besides bread, mayo, and cheese. Melts tend to have items like tuna, other meats, etc.
What To Serve With Grilled Cheese
- French Fries
- Fruit Salad
Do something simple or whip up your favorite side dish. Go ahead and make whatever sounds good. We tend to do simply like chips and a pickle, or soup.
Tips For Making An Air Fried Grilled Cheese Sandwich
- Make sure not to saturate bread with the mayo or toast up the way you want.
- If you are worried about the sandwich coming part, put a toothpick or two in the sandwich to secure it.
- You can use any bread you like, from Texas toast, whole wheat, honey oat, classic white, etc.
- Make sure not to overlap the bread, so you get an even cook.
- Also, use the cooking time as a guide. Depending on bread thickness, the time can cook fast or slower than in the recipe card.
