These chili sauce and cranberry sauce meatballs are the appetizer that always disappears first. You need just four ingredients: a bag of frozen meatballs, a can of cranberry sauce, a bottle of chili sauce, and a little brown sugar. Stir them together, let the slow cooker do the work, and you get glossy, sweet-and-tangy meatballs that taste like you fussed far more than you did.

The first time I made these chili sauce and cranberry sauce meatballs, I served them to my family during a holiday get-together. I barely had time to set out the toothpicks before the slow cooker was empty—everyone kept coming back for “just one more.”
They’re a classic for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and game day, and they hold beautifully on the Warm setting, so you can set them out and forget about them.
Pick your method: slow cooker (hands-off, 2 to 5 hours), Instant Pot (about 25 minutes), Ninja HyperHeat (pressure or slow cook), Ninja Foodi (pressure cook or air crisp for browned, glazed meatballs), stovetop (30 minutes), or oven.

Why You’ll Love These Meatballs
- Only 4 ingredients. Everything comes from the pantry or freezer aisle.
- Hands-off. Crockpot meatballs with cranberry sauce and chili sauce take about 5 minutes of prep.
- Party-friendly. They stay warm and saucy for hours, straight from the slow cooker.
- Sweet, tangy, and a little zippy. The cranberry brings tartness, the chili sauce brings tomato and gentle spice.
Ingredients for Cranberry Sauce and Chili Sauce Meatballs

- Frozen meatballs: Fully cooked cocktail-size meatballs are easiest. Homestyle, Italian-style, or turkey meatballs all work.
- Jellied cranberry sauce:. It melts into a smooth, glossy sauce. Whole berry cranberry sauce also works if you like bits of fruit, and so does homemade, like my Instant Pot cranberry sauce.
- Chili sauce: Heinz chili sauce is the classic choice. It’s found near the ketchup and cocktail sauce, not in the Asian foods aisle. (More on that below.)
- Brown sugar: Optional, but it rounds out the tartness.
- Lemon juice: Brightens the sauce. Optional.
Chili Sauce vs. Sweet Chili Sauce
This trips a lot of people up. The chili sauce in this recipe is the American tomato-based condiment, similar to a thicker, spicier ketchup. Thai sweet chili sauce is a different product and will make these taste completely different (tasty, but not this recipe).
No chili sauce? Mix 1 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and ½ teaspoon chili powder. Cocktail sauce also works in a pinch, though its horseradish adds extra kick.
Slow Cooker Method: Crockpot Meatballs with Cranberry Sauce and Chili Sauce

Step 1: Make the sauce. Add the cranberry sauce, chili sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice to a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. Stir to break up the cranberry sauce. It won’t be fully smooth yet, and that’s fine.
Step 2: Add the meatballs. Add the frozen meatballs (no need to thaw) and stir until coated.

Step 3: Cook. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, stirring once or twice, until the sauce is smooth and the meatballs are heated through to 165°F in the center.
Step 4: Serve. Switch to Warm and serve with toothpicks.
Instant Pot Method (About 25 Minutes)
Pressure cooking gets these on the table fast. The one trick is layering: thick, sugary sauces like cranberry and chili sauce can scorch on the bottom and trigger a burn warning, so the water goes in first and the sauce goes on top.

Step 1: Add water and meatballs. Pour ½ cup water into the inner pot. Add the frozen meatballs in an even layer.
Step 2: Add the sauce on top. In a bowl, stir together the cranberry sauce, chili sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice, breaking up the cranberry sauce as much as you can. Spoon it over the meatballs. Don’t stir.

Step 3: Pressure cook. Lock the lid and set the valve to Sealing. Pressure Cook on HIGH for 5 minutes for cocktail-size meatballs or 8 minutes for larger (1½-inch) homestyle meatballs. The pot will take about 10 to 15 minutes to come to pressure. (Frozen meatballs cook quickly under pressure; my Instant Pot BBQ meatballs use the same 5-minute timing.) Let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes, then quick release the rest. Stir well. The sauce will be thinner than the slow cooker version, so press Sauté and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often, until glossy and thickened. Make sure the meatballs are 165°F in the center.
Step 4: Switch to Keep Warm and serve from the pot.
Instant Pot slow cook option: Stir everything together (no water needed), cover with a glass lid or the regular lid with the valve on Venting, and use Slow Cook on More (high) for 3 to 4 hours. The Instant Pot’s slow cook setting tends to run cooler than a traditional slow cooker, so check that the meatballs reach 165°F before serving.

Ninja HyperHeat Method
The Ninja HyperHeat is a 6.5-quart pressure cooker that also has Slow Cook, Sear/Sauté, and Keep Warm functions, so you can make these meatballs fast or low and slow. Its removable nonstick pot can go straight to the table for serving (set it on a trivet).
Pressure cook (fastest):
Step 1: Pour ½ cup water into the pot and add the frozen meatballs in an even layer. Stir the sauce ingredients together in a bowl and spoon over the meatballs without stirring. Attach the pressure lid and set the valve to seal. Select Pressure on HIGH for 5 minutes (cocktail-size) or 8 minutes (larger meatballs).Let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes, then release the remaining pressure.
Step 2: Remove the lid, stir, and use Sear/Sauté on medium for 3 to 5 minutes to thicken the sauce, until the meatballs reach 165°F. Switch to Keep Warm for serving.
Slow cook:
Step 1: Add the sauce ingredients to the pot and use Sear/Sauté on medium for about 3 minutes, stirring, until the cranberry sauce melts. Turn off Sear/Sauté. Add the frozen meatballs and stir to coat.
Step 2: Select Slow Cook on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours or LOW for 4 to 5 hours, following your manual’s instructions for the lid and valve position during slow cooking. Stir once or twice, then switch to Keep Warm once the meatballs reach 165°F. Melting the sauce first gives you a smoother sauce sooner and lets you skip the lumpy first hour.

Ninja Foodi Method (Pressure Cook or Air Crisp)
A Ninja Foodi pressure cooker with a crisping lid gives you two options: the quick pressure-cooked version, or air-crisped meatballs tossed in a sticky glaze. (If you have the Ninja PossibleCooker Pro, which slow cooks but doesn’t pressure cook, follow my Ninja Foodi PossibleCooker Pro cranberry meatballs instead.)
Option 1: Pressure cook
Step 1: Pour ½ cup water into the pot, add the frozen meatballs, and spoon the mixed sauce over the top without stirring. Attach the pressure lid and turn the valve to SEAL. Select Pressure on HIGH for 5 minutes (cocktail-size) or 8 minutes (larger meatballs).
Step 2: Natural release for 5 minutes, then turn the valve to VENT to release the rest. Stir, then use Sear/Sauté on medium for 3 to 5 minutes to thicken the sauce, until the meatballs reach 165°F.
Option 2: Air-crisped glazed meatballs
This version gives the meatballs browned, slightly crisp edges that grab onto the sauce.
Step 1: Place the frozen meatballs in the Cook & Crisp basket inside the pot. Close the crisping lid and select Air Crisp at 390°F for 8 to 10 minutes, shaking the basket halfway, until browned and heated to 165°F. If you have a regular air fryer, you can crisp them the same way I do my air fryer Trader Joe’s turkey meatballs, then warm the sauce on the stove. Remove the basket and set the meatballs aside.
Step 2: Add the sauce ingredients to the empty pot. Select Sear/Sauté on medium and stir for 4 to 5 minutes, until the cranberry sauce melts and the sauce is bubbling. Return the meatballs to the pot and toss to coat. Serve right away, or hold on Keep Warm if your model has it.
Foodi slow cook option: Stir everything together in the pot, attach the pressure lid with the valve on VENT, and use Slow Cook with the same times as the slow cooker method.

Stovetop Method (Ready in 30 Minutes)
- In a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat, stir together the cranberry sauce, chili sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice until the cranberry sauce melts, about 5 minutes.
- Add the frozen meatballs and stir to coat.
- Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs reach 165°F in the center.
- Transfer to a slow cooker on Warm for serving, or serve straight from the pot.
Oven Method
Stir the sauce ingredients together in a 9×13-inch baking dish, add the frozen meatballs, and toss to coat. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes, stirring halfway, until heated through to 165°F.

Using Homemade Meatballs
Prefer to make your own? Mix 1 lb ground beef, ½ lb ground pork, ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 egg, ¼ cup milk, 2 tablespoons grated onion, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper. Roll into 1-inch balls and bake on a lined sheet pan at 400°F for 15 to 18 minutes, until they reach 160°F. Then add them to the sauce using any method above and cook until the sauce is hot and smooth. Homemade meatballs need less time: about 2 hours on LOW or 15 minutes on the stove.
If you’d rather use the air fryer, my Olive Garden meatballs are a great homemade base. Skip the marinara and toss them in this cranberry chili sauce instead.
Variations
- Cranberry sauce and BBQ sauce meatballs. Swap the chili sauce for your favorite barbecue sauce for a smokier, sweeter version. If you love that sticky BBQ glaze, try my air fryer BBQ meatballs too.
- Grape jelly version. Use a 12 oz jar of grape jelly in place of the cranberry sauce for the other classic party meatball.
- Cocktail wieners. Use two 14 oz packages of cocktail wieners (little smokies) instead of meatballs. Cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. For a faster, crispier take, see my air fryer little smokies with grape jelly sauce.
- Spicier. Add ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes or a few dashes of hot sauce.
- Cranberry sauce meatballs without chili sauce. Use the ketchup substitute above, or try BBQ sauce.
- Holiday twist. Add ½ teaspoon orange zest and a pinch of cinnamon to the sauce.
- Whiskey BBQ. For a smoky, grown-up version, make my crockpot Jack Daniel’s meatballs.

Tips for the Best Cocktail Meatballs
- Don’t thaw the meatballs. They go in frozen, which is part of what makes this so easy. It’s the same approach I use for my crock pot frozen meatballs in marinara.
- Stir once or twice. It helps the jellied cranberry sauce melt evenly and keeps the meatballs on the bottom from sticking.
- Don’t overcook. After 5 to 6 hours on LOW, meatballs can turn soft and the sauce can darken. Switch to Warm once they’re hot.
- Double it for a crowd. A 6-quart slow cooker holds a double batch. Add about an hour to the LOW cook time.
[Your note: any tip you discovered while testing.]
Make-Ahead, Storage, and Reheating
- Make ahead: Cook fully, cool, and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the slow cooker on LOW for about 2 hours or on the stove over medium-low.
- Freeze: Freeze cooled meatballs and sauce for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat: Warm until they reach 165°F in the center. Add a splash of water if the sauce has thickened too much.

How Many Meatballs Per Person?
For an appetizer spread, plan on 3 to 4 cocktail meatballs per person, or 5 to 6 if these are the main snack. One 2-lb bag of cocktail meatballs usually holds 60 to 70 meatballs (check your package), which serves about 12 to 15 people as an appetizer.
Serving a holiday crowd? These pair nicely with my jalapeño cranberry dip and a tray of crackers.
FAQ
Can I use frozen meatballs with cranberry sauce and chili sauce? Yes, and it’s the easiest way to make this recipe. Add them straight from the freezer without thawing.
Can I use whole berry cranberry sauce? Yes. The sauce will be a little less smooth, with bits of cranberry throughout.
What can I use instead of chili sauce? Ketchup mixed with brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder is the closest swap. BBQ sauce or cocktail sauce also work but change the flavor.
Is chili sauce the same as cocktail sauce? No. They’re similar tomato-based condiments, but cocktail sauce contains horseradish, which gives it a sharper bite.
Can I cook these meatballs on HIGH? Yes. HIGH for 2 to 3 hours works well. Stir every hour so the sauce doesn’t scorch at the edges.
Can I pressure cook frozen meatballs? Yes. Fully cooked frozen meatballs can go straight into an Instant Pot or Ninja without thawing. They’ll just take a little longer to come to pressure.
Why did my Instant Pot or Ninja show a burn warning? Thick, sugary sauces can scorch on the bottom of the pot. Always add ½ cup water first, layer the meatballs, and spoon the sauce on top without stirring. Thicken the sauce on Sauté after pressure cooking.
Can I double this in a pressure cooker? Yes, in a 6-quart or larger pot, as long as you stay under the max-fill line. Keep the same cook time; it will just take longer to come to pressure.
How long can they sit out on Warm? Keep them on the Warm setting (at or above 140°F) while serving. Don’t let them sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
