Ingredient round-up

Ingredients needed for Air Fryer Mincemeat Pies on kitchen table.
  • Shortcrust pastry – Give the perfect buttery, crispy base for the pies. It also holds its shape really well. I recommend using pre-made pastry for a quick and easy solution.
  • Mincemeat filling – A rich, fruity, and spiced filling that’s traditionally enjoyed during the holidays. Look for a quality store-bought version, extra points for Brandy or Rum spiced mincemeat!
  • Egg – Brushed over the pies for a shiny, golden finish.
  • Powdered sugar – Lightly dusted over the top after baking for a festive touch and a bit of sweetness.

How to Make Air Fryer Mincemeat Pies

Rolling out dough for Air Fryer Mincemeat Pies.

Prepare the pastry: Roll out the shortcrust pastry sheet on a floured surface. Use a cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles, about 3-4 inches in diameter.

Filling pastry rounds with mincemeat mixture for Air Fryer Pies.

Fill the pies: Spoon about a tablespoon of mincemeat filling onto each circle. Do not overfill, as it will be difficult to seal the pies.

Top and seal: Place a second pastry circle on top of each filled pie. Press the edges with a fork to seal, and make a small slit on top to allow steam to escape.

Brushing the pies with egg wash for a golden finish in the air fryer.

Brush with egg wash: Preheat the air fryer to 320°F (160°C). Beat the egg and brush it over the pies for a golden finish.

Air fry: Arrange the pies in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t touch. Cook for 12-15 minutes, or until the pies are golden brown and the crust is crisp.

Dust and serve: Allow the pies to cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm and enjoy!

Flavor Variations

  • Orange Zest: Add a hint of fresh orange zest to the mincemeat filling for a citrusy twist.
  • Chopped Nuts: Mix a handful of chopped walnuts or almonds into the filling for added texture and flavor.
  • Vanilla Sugar: Use vanilla sugar instead of regular powdered sugar for a delicate vanilla aroma.
  • Brandy or Rum: Add a splash of brandy or rum to the mincemeat filling for extra warmth and depth. You can also use rum extract for a stronger flavor.

Tips & Tricks

  • Seal well: Press the edges of the shortcrust pastry well to seal, then use a fork to make a crimped design.
  • Allow steam to escape: Make a small hole or slit at the top of each pie to prevent the pastry from bursting.
  • Create a decorative top: Use a star or snowflake-shaped cookie cutter to cut out a decorative design in the top pastry circle for a festive look.
  • Avoid overfilling: Too much filling can cause the pies to burst open. Use just enough to cover the base circle, leaving space around the edges for sealing.

FAQ’s

Can I make the pies in advance? Yes, you can assemble the pies a day in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. Cook them in the air fryer when ready to serve.

How do I store leftover pies? Store any leftover pies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for a few minutes to restore the crispness.

Can I use puff pastry instead of shortcrust? You can, but I don’t recommend it. Shortcrust holds its shape better and it’s easier to put the mincemeat pies together.

Can I freeze the Air Fryer Mincemeat Pies? Yes, you can freeze them before or after cooking. If freezing before cooking, assemble the pies, then place on a baking tray to freeze individually. Store them in a freezer-safe bag. To cook from frozen, add a few extra minutes in the air fryer.

If freezing after cooking, let them cool down completely before freezing. Reheat in the air fryer when ready to eat.
