What Is Star Bread?

Star bread is a type of yeast-raised dough made from flour, water, sugar, salt, and active dry yeast. It gets its name from the star shape that it forms when baked. While the origins of star bread are unknown, it is thought to have originated in Europe or Asia. Star bread is famous in many countries worldwide and can be found in both sweet and savory varieties.

How To Make Air Fryer Star Bread

Air Fryer Star Bread

Warming The Milk: Begin warming your milk in the microwave for about two minutes (for milk straight from the fridge). If the milk is too hot after microwaving, let it cool until it is warm before step #2.

Proofing the yeast: Add the yeast to a mixer bowl with ¼ cup sugar. Pour in the warm milk and stir. Cover with a dish towel and allow to sit for about ten minutes. The yeast mixture will have a froth to it, which signifies the yeast is active and good to use.

Yeast: While the yeast is proofing, preheat your oven to 170 degrees F for 15 minutes. Turn off the oven after 10 minutes but keep the door closed. To the yeast and sugar mixture, add flour, salt, a stick of butter, and a large egg. Mix with a paddle or hook attachment if using a stand mixer. Form into a ball when well combined after 3-4 minutes.

Spray a large bowl with cooking spray and add the ball of dough. Cover in saran wrap and place in the preheated oven for two hours. Your ball of dough should grow 2-3 times in size. Press any air out once it has finished rising.

Pro Tip: To better control the dough, refrigerate overnight or for a few hours before moving on to the next step.

Slice the dough into four equal pieces of dough. Roll each dough piece out to form a disc (think: pizza crust) and shape it into a circle. Placing a large, circular bowl over the dough disc and cutting around the edges is an easy way to get a perfect circle.

Add brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon into a bowl and stir.

Add 3-4 tablespoons of the filling onto one of the dough circles (the bottom layer). After adding filling to the bottom layer, add a disc of dough on top. Repeat this process. There are four layers of dough, three having the filling and the top layer being blank. Place a small bowl in the center of the stack of layers of dough to create an indent. Remove bowl.

Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut into 16 slices, leaving the center uncut. Pick up two slices, and twist in opposite directions. Pinch the ends to seal and to form a point. Repeat with all slices.

Preheat the air fryer to 330 degrees F. Prepare the egg wash and brush over the bread. Air Fry the bread for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. While the bread is baking, prepare the brown sugar glaze. Brush the glaze onto the bread as soon as it comes out of the oven. Save the extra for adding more later as needed.

Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!

Tips For Making Bread In the Air Fryer:

If you’re looking for a delicious and easy way to make bread, then you’ll want to try making it in the air fryer! Here are some tips to help you get started:

Parchment-Paper: For best results and ease of moving this air fryer star bread, place it onto a parchment-lined baking air fryer. this will help the bread stay together.

Size: Since every air fryer is a different size, make sure to measure the air fryer basket to make sure your air fryer bread will fit. Remember to leave a bit of pace around the bread, which will help it cook up to perfection.

Flipping: Depending on what air fryer you own, you may need to flip the bread halfway during the cooking process to make both sides golden brown.

Making Bread In An Air Fryer Oven: If you are making this in an air fryer oven, place the bread on the last tray or shelf in your air fryer oven so that the inside gets fully cooked. The key is to cook the outside and inside at the same time. If you put the bread on too high of a shelf, the outside will get cooked, before the inside, leaving it raw in the middle.

What’s better than a warm, fresh loaf of bread? A loaf of bread with your favorite fillings! We’ll share some of our favorite star bread fillings in this blog post. We’ve got you covered whether you’re in the mood for something savory or sweet. So, what are you waiting for? Start baking!

It will be a show-stopper without any topping, but I usually serve with a bit of powdered sugar dusted on top.

How To Make This Ahead Of Time

Refrigerate The Dough: The dough can be refrigerated for up to 2 days before baking. Rember to punch down the refrigerated dough before using it in the recipe. Make sure that you cover your dough tightly with saran wrap before proceeding with the recipe.

Freeze The Dough: Just follow these easy steps when you are ready to make your delicious, fresh-from oven bread. Prepare the dough, cover it tightly with saran wrap, and then place it into a freezer bag. It will last for about 1 to 2 months.

For best results, let the dough thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Then follow the recipe.
