What Are Christmas Bagels?

Christmas Bagels are a family tradition in my home. My parents made these when I was younger, but we would always bake them. So, today I tried them in the air fryer. And they are amazing!

While I only created green and red bagels, you can do the same recipe and switch out the colors for any of your favorites! They are made with the same dough that I use as a base for many of my Air Fryer Bagels. They are easy to make and make any holiday party, breakfast, or brunch fantastic!

Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Christmas Bagels

Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Christmas Bagels on a white table.
  • Self-Rising Flour: Provides the base for the bagel dough, ensuring a light and fluffy texture.
  • Greek Yogurt: Adds moisture and richness to the dough, enhancing its overall softness.
  • Red & Green Food Coloring: Used to create festive colors in the bagels, adding a holiday touch.
  • Egg and Water: For a simple egg wash.

How To Make Air Fryer Christmas Bagels

Here are the step-by-step instructions:

Mixing the bagel dough with self-rising flour and Greek yogurt to create a smooth, elastic consistency

Step One: Place 1 cup of flour in a large mixing bowl. Scoop about 1 cup of Greek yogurt in the center of the flour. (You want a nice, thick Greek yogurt; if it is a thinner Greek yogurt, you will need to use less – start with ½ cup if you think your yogurt might be on the thinner side). Add a small amount of red food coloring.

Adding red and green food coloring to portions of the dough for a festive appearance

Step 2: Begin working the yogurt and food coloring into the flour—use either a fork or gloved hands. Continue mixing the dough until it begins to come together into one mass. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured countertop and continue kneading until it forms a smooth ball and is no longer sticky.

Shaping the colored dough into bagel rings, preparing them for the air fryer

Step Three: Repeat the recipe to form a second ball using green food coloring. Form two balls with the dough and slice each of them into eight equal pieces. For each bagel, roll one piece of red dough and one piece of green dough into logs. Twist the two logs together and then roll them for a few moments so that they become one log. Twist as needed to keep a nice spiral of color. Gently join the two ends together to form the bagels.

Step Four: Brush each bagel lightly with egg wash for a nice sheen—Bake in the air fryer at 325 degrees F, with a cook time of 8-10 minutes.

Air Fryer Christmas Bagels Ingredient Notes

  • Yogurt: The type of yogurt will really make a difference in how much you use in the recipe. I like to use Fage 2% Greek yogurt, which results in an excellent 1:1 ratio of self-rising flour: yogurt. I have used other brands and needed only ½ cup of yogurt for 1 cup of flour. If you find that your dough is very sticky with a 1:1 ratio, add a bit more flour – a couple of tablespoons at a time – until you get a somewhat elastic dough. Please note: the dough will be pretty sticky at first, so work on it for a few minutes before determining that it is too sticky and that more flour is needed. These bagels are delicious. They are moist and have some nice chew like traditional bagels. Slice in half to
reveal a beautiful swirl of color. They can even be toasted!
  • Flour: It is essential to use SELF-RISING FLOUR, which differs from all-purpose flour. All-purpose flour does not have the leavening agents in the flour to make this recipe work. Self-rising flour is available at most grocery stores in America.
  • Food Coloring: You can use any food color; today, I used red and green for a special Christmas Breakfast.

Air Fryer Christmas Bagels Recipe Tips

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: For the best results, use fresh Greek yogurt and self-rising flour to ensure a light, fluffy texture in your bagels.
  • Adjust Food Coloring Carefully: When adding red and green food coloring, start with a few drops and mix until you achieve your desired festive colors.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer for a few minutes before adding the bagels to ensure even cooking and a crispy exterior.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Place the bagels in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving space between each bagel to allow for proper air circulation and even browning.
  • Monitor Cooking Time: Keep an eye on the bagels while they cook to prevent over-browning. Depending on your air fryer model, cooking times may vary.
  • Use an Egg Wash: Brush the bagels with an egg wash before air frying to achieve a golden, shiny finish.
  • Cool Properly: Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack after air frying to maintain their crispy texture and prevent sogginess.

Air Fryer Christmas Bagels Recipe Faqs

Can I use regular flour instead of self-rising flour? You can use regular flour, but you’ll need to add baking powder and salt to achieve the same leavening effect as self-rising flour.

How do I get the festive colors to stay vibrant? Make sure to knead the food coloring thoroughly into the dough. Using gel food coloring can also help maintain vibrant colors.

How long should I cook the bagels? Air fry the bagels for about 8-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer.

Can I freeze these bagels? Yes, you can freeze the bagels after they’ve cooled. Place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. Reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes before serving.

Can I use different food colors? Yes, you can use different colors or combinations to match your holiday theme. Gel food colors work best for vibrant results.

What if my bagels are not as crispy as I’d like? If the bagels are not crispy enough, try increasing the cooking time slightly or adjusting the temperature. Ensure they are in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
