If you’ve ever stood in the bakery line at Buc-ee’s, you know the treat I’m talking about. It’s the one wrapped in clear cello, roughly the size of your hand, packed with Fruity Pebbles all the way through, and soft enough that it bends before it breaks. My kids spot it before they spot the beaver.

The problem is that the nearest Buc-ee’s is a road trip away for most of us. So I spent a couple of weekends figuring out how to get that same thick, gooey, fruity square out of my own kitchen. Turns out the secret isn’t a special ingredient. It’s a smaller pan, a lot of marshmallow, and keeping the heat low.
If you’ve made my Air Fryer Fruity Pebbles Treats, this is the stovetop, extra-thick cousin. These come together in about 15 minutes, no oven, and they happen to be perfect for Halloween. Fruity Pebbles are already every color of the candy bowl, and they cut cleanly with a pumpkin or ghost cookie cutter for class parties.

What Makes These Taste Like Buc-ee’s
Three things separate the Buc-ee’s version from a standard Fruity Pebbles treat:
- They’re thick. Most recipes press the mixture into a 9×13 pan, which gives you a bar about ¾ inch tall. Buc-ee’s treats are closer to 2 inches. Using an 8×8 pan with the same amount of cereal gets you there.
- They’re gooey, not crunchy. Store-bought and most homemade treats go hard within a day. The fix is more marshmallow than you think you need, low heat so the sugar never caramelizes, and a handful of whole marshmallows folded in at the end so there are soft pockets throughout.
- The Pebbles are mixed in, not sprinkled on. The color runs all the way through the bar. I use a 2:1 ratio of Fruity Pebbles to plain Rice Krispies, which keeps the fruity flavor front and center without turning soggy the way an all-Pebbles bar can.
Ingredients

- Salted butter: Salted butter balances the sweetness. If you only have unsalted, add another ¼ teaspoon of salt.
- Mini marshmallows: Minis melt faster and more evenly than the large ones. Set some aside to fold in at the end for gooey pockets. Buy fresh; stale marshmallows melt into a grainy mess.
- Vanilla extract: A little goes a long way and rounds out the marshmallow flavor.
- Fine salt: Don’t skip it. It’s what keeps these from tasting flat.
- Fruity Pebbles: Store brand works fine here.
- Rice Krispies: These give the bar structure and a little crunch.
How to Make Copycat Buc-ee’s Fruity Pebbles Treats

Step 1: Prep the pan. Line an 8×8 pan with parchment, leaving overhang on two sides so you can lift the whole slab out. Lightly butter the parchment.
Step 2: Melt the butter. In a large pot (bigger than you think; you need room to stir 6 cups of cereal), melt the butter over low heat.
Step 3: Melt the marshmallows. Add the full 16-ounce bag of marshmallows and stir constantly until they’re just melted and smooth. Keep the heat low the whole time. This is the step that decides whether your treats are gooey or hard. The moment they’re smooth, pull the pot off the heat.

Step 4: Add vanilla and salt. Stir in the vanilla and salt off the heat.
Step 5: Add the cereal. Dump in the Fruity Pebbles and Rice Krispies and fold with a spatula until every piece is coated.
Step 6: Fold in the reserved marshmallows. Add the extra cup of whole marshmallows and give it just a few turns. You want them to stay mostly whole.

Step 7: Press into the pan. Transfer to the pan and press gently with a buttered spatula or buttered hands. Gentle is the key word. Packing it down hard is the other reason treats turn out dense and tough.
Step 8: Let them set. Leave at room temperature for about 1 hour. Lift out using the parchment and cut into 9 big squares (Buc-ee’s size) or 16 smaller ones.

Tips for Extra Gooey Rice Crispy Treats
- Low heat, every time. If the marshmallow mixture starts to bubble or brown at the edges, it’s too hot. Overcooked marshmallow sets like candy.
- Don’t refrigerate. The fridge makes them stiff. Room temperature in an airtight container is right.
- Work fast once the cereal goes in. The mixture starts firming up within a minute or two. Have your pan ready before you start.
- Fresh cereal matters. Fruity Pebbles that have been open for a month go soft, and soft cereal makes soggy bars.
- Cut with a buttered knife. Wipe and re-butter between cuts for clean edges.
Halloween Variations
These need almost nothing to become a Halloween treat, but here are a few easy ways to lean in:
- Cookie cutter shapes. Press the mixture a little thinner in a 9×13 pan and cut with pumpkin, ghost, or bat cutters once set. Save the scraps; they’re the cook’s snack.
- Halloween sprinkles. Press orange, purple, and black sprinkles onto the top before the bars set.
- Candy melt drizzle. Melt orange or purple candy melts and drizzle over the cut squares.
- Monster eyes. Press candy eyeballs into the top while the mixture is still warm.
- Individually wrapped. Cut into squares and wrap each one in clear cello with a twist of orange ribbon. This is how Buc-ee’s sells theirs, and it’s the easiest thing to hand out at a class party or drop in a trick-or-treat bag for the neighbors you actually know.
If you’re building a whole no-bake Halloween spread, these go well next to my Halloween Pudding Cups, which are another 10-minute, kids-can-help dessert.

Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Layer parchment between the squares so they don’t stick. They’re best the day you make them and still soft on day two. By day three they’ve lost some of the gooey factor but are still good.
To freeze, wrap squares individually in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer bag for up to 6 weeks. Thaw on the counter for 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these in a 9×13 pan? Yes, but they’ll be thinner and less like the Buc-ee’s version. Double the recipe for a 9×13 if you want the same thickness.
Why did my rice crispy treats turn out hard? Almost always one of two things: the marshmallows got too hot, or the mixture was pressed too firmly into the pan. Low heat and a light hand fix both.
Can I use marshmallow fluff instead? You can, but the texture is stickier and the bars don’t hold their shape as well. Stick with mini marshmallows for this one.
Can I use only Fruity Pebbles? You can. The bars will be more intensely fruity but softer and a bit soggier. The 2:1 blend is closer to the Buc-ee’s texture.
Are these gluten-free? Fruity Pebbles are labeled gluten-free, but standard Rice Krispies contain malt. Swap in a gluten-free crisp rice cereal if that matters for your crowd.
