Long John Silver’s Onion Rings Recipe Tips

  • Choose the Right Onions : Sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla give a naturally mild flavorful bite. Avoid very small onions as thicker rings fry up crispier.
  • Keep Rings Separate : Gently separate onion rings before dipping. Overlapping rings can stick together and cook unevenly.
  • Batter Consistency Matters : Aim for a smooth slightly thick batter. Too thin and it will not cling, too thick and it can get doughy.
  • Spray, Do Not Soak : Lightly spray oil on the onion rings in the air fryer. Too much oil makes them greasy, too little prevents browning.
  • Single Layer Cooking : Air fry in a single layer for even crispiness. Cook in batches if needed as overcrowding leads to soggy rings.
  • Flip Halfway : Turn the onion rings halfway through cooking for golden even crispiness on both sides.
  • Serve Immediately : Onion rings are best fresh from the fryer. If making ahead, keep warm in a 200°F oven for a few minutes to retain crunch.

Storing, Freezing and Reheating Instructions

  • Storing: Store leftover onion rings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For best texture, let them cool completely before sealing to prevent sogginess.
  • Freezing: Place cooled onion rings in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 1 month. Freezing individually first prevents them from sticking together.
  • Reheating: Reheat frozen or refrigerated onion rings in an air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes until crispy and hot. Avoid microwaving, as it will make them soft and soggy.
