Air Fryer Philly Cheesesteak Calzones are amazing! Being from Philadelphia, I wanted to create an authentic steak and cheese calzone for a long time, so today, I made one for my family’s lunch!
If you are a huge fan of Philly cheesesteak sandwich, you will abosultey love this calzone. And with the help fo the air fyrer you will make this in minutes.
I added the traditional minced green peppers and onions, used a rib-eye steak that I slivered, and added some white cheddar cheese, which is not native in Philly Cheesesteaks my kids will not eat the Cheese Whiz, sorry Philadelphia.
Saute all of the goodness up, wrap it in some premade pizza dough, and you have a winner. I added some olive oil and Italian seasonings on top so that it would brown up. Another option, you can also do an egg wash, that’s entirely on you.
You can also add and change out the fillings. The recipe will remain the same.
Calzones
I grew up on calzones, coming from an Italian household, but they are really just a pizza that you fold in half if you are not familiar with them.
What really makes a calzone a calzone is a half-circle shape. That is the true shape of a calzone.
How to Make Air Fryer Calzones
Making calzones is a bit of an art. I would recommend that you have never made a calzone before (air fryer or oven) to use prepared pizza dough.
Second, I would recommend that you do not overfill your calzone since you really need to fold it in half.
Then you need to seal the edges. I usually use my hands and crimp the edges or use a fork and use the tines around the edges.
Use Refrigerator Pizza Crust Dough
You probably saw the rolls of the canned pizza dough in the dairy section at your local grocery stores (In America).
It comes perfectly ready to go, and it’s already in the correct thickness. Just open the package and you are good for your fillings.
Using Homemade Dough
For this recipe, I used homemade dough, here is my grandmother’s recipe.
How To Make Air Fryer Philly Cheesesteak Calzones
If you are using homemade dough, roll your dough on a gently floured surface. Cut the dough to have enough dough to wrap the filling, or use a biscuit cutter to make mini calzones.
In a large frying pan, prepare your calzone filling: Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and turn the heat to medium-high heat. When the oil is heated, add the steak, peppers, and onions and saute until fully cooked. Stir frequently.
Then add your filling to the center of the calzone, leave enough space around the edges, so you can fold it up and seal the edges. Sprinkle the cheese on top.
Fold the dough over the calzone. Either use your fingers or use a fork’s tines to seal the edges. If you find that the edges are not sealing, use small drops of water.
Spray your air fryer basket/tray with cooking spray or olive oil spray. Place your calzone on the tray and insert the tray into the air fryer.
You can either spray the tops with cooking spray or use an egg wash.
Set your temperature to 375 degrees F for 5 Minutes. After 5 minutes, flip and add another 2-4 minutes. Make sure it’s cooked all the way through.
Plate, serve, and enjoy!
What To Dip Your Calzones In
Depending on what type of calzone you have made, there are so many options. Today, I paired with a traditional marinara sauce, but some other great & easy options would be:
- Marinara Sauce
- Alfredo Sauce
- Ranch Dressing
- Butter Sauce
- Au Jus Sauce
- Cheese Sauce
