The air fryer is a kitchen marvel, giving you crispy results with minimal oil and mess. But what if you could make cleanup even easier? Enter parchment paper! While it’s a brilliant hack, using it incorrectly can be dangerous.
Here is your complete guide to safely using parchment paper in your air fryer, including the biggest mistakes to avoid.

✅ Why Use Parchment Paper in Your Air Fryer?
Using parchment paper isn’t just about reducing scrubbing; it offers several key benefits:
- Even Cooking: Specially designed air fryer liners are perforated, which helps maintain even heat circulation while still containing grease.
- Zero Cleanup: This is the biggest benefit! Line your basket and throw the paper away when done, leaving your air fryer basket spotless.
- Prevents Sticking: Sticky foods like sugary glazes, marinated chicken, or cheese won’t fuse to the metal grate.
- Aids Lifting: When cooking delicate items (like fish or cookies), you can use the paper like a sling to easily lift the food out without breaking it.
🛑 Crucial Safety Rule: Never Preheat with Parchment Paper
This is the most important rule for safe air frying with parchment paper:
You must NEVER place parchment paper in an empty or preheating air fryer basket.
Air fryers circulate extremely hot air at high speeds. If the paper is lightweight and unsecured by food, it will immediately fly up into the heating element. This is a severe fire hazard.
📜 How to Choose the Right Parchment Paper
Do not just grab regular parchment paper from your pantry! You need the right kind to guarantee optimal airflow and safety.
Use Pre-Cut Air Fryer Liners (Highly Recommended)
These are the best option because they are specifically designed for the appliance:
- Perforated: They have holes that allow the air to circulate freely beneath and around the food, ensuring that crispy texture you want.
- Sized: They fit perfectly into the basket (available for square or round baskets).
Use Regular Parchment Paper (If Necessary)
If you must use standard baking parchment, follow these steps carefully:
- Cut it to size: Ensure the paper covers only the bottom of the basket and does not extend up the sides.
- Punch holes: Use a hole punch or sharp knife to create several small ventilation holes in the paper yourself. This is essential for proper air circulation.
- Use the right paper: Only use parchment paper, not wax paper, which has a much lower smoke point and will likely melt or burn.
💡 Best Practices for Safe Air Frying
- Only Use When Food is Loaded: The paper must be secured by the food at all times to prevent it from flying up into the heating element.
- Never Block Airflow Completely: The air fryer cooks food by circulating air. Whether you use pre-cut liners or homemade parchment, the air must still flow around the food. Do not let the paper block the entire sides of the basket.
- Maximum Temperature Limit: Most parchment paper is safe up to 420°F (215°C). Check the packaging, and never exceed the temperature limit specified by the paper manufacturer.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use aluminum foil in the air fryer instead? Yes, aluminum foil is generally safe, but it can block more airflow than perforated parchment paper. Also, do not use foil with acidic foods (like tomato sauce or vinegar), as the acid can react with the aluminum.
Is there a non-paper alternative for easy cleanup? Yes! Silicone air fryer liners (often shaped like bowls) are reusable, washable, and completely prevent sticking, making them a great eco-friendly alternative.
Where do I put the parchment paper? It should be placed flat on the bottom of the main cooking basket or tray, directly under the food.

I’m glad you mentioned to weight the parchment paper down. That’s very important when using the Cuisinart Air Fryer. It comes with a wire basket, suspended near the heat coils. Air flows through around the basket, lifting the paper up near these coils. I make sure to spray with cooking spray first to help keep it down, and I also make sure to place my food near all four sides. One mistake I made that I want to share. When the halfway time came up, I removed one of two chops to check the internal temperature. The fan was still on inside with the partner chop. The parchment lifted up and touched the coil. Good thing I was standing right there to fix the situation. Now I spray before I set the food on, then spray the oil on the food.

I love parchment liners and use them all the time. I have a question though. I have an Power XL air fryer that has air holes around the sides of the basket. I have been using the bowl-type liners without holes. Is there some advantage to using the liners with holes or am I safe with the hole-less ones? I have looked everywhere for the solution but it seems to land in the opinion area. Meanwhile I have a gazillion liners I will continue to enjoy.

Nice tip, good to know. I have had a bout or two with the parchment paper. Also spraying the basket is a great idea to reduce scrubbing it.
