Description

A 5-minute homemade copycat of McCormick Original Taco Seasoning Mix. Matches the packet flavor using pantry spices and skips the dairy.

Ingredients 

  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano, Mexican preferred
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • ¾ tsp onion powder
  • ¾ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne, Optional

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a small bowl.
  • Whisk for 30 seconds until the color is uniform.
  • Use immediately, or store in an airtight jar in a cool, dark cabinet for up to 6 months.

Notes

How to Use on 1 lb of Meat

  1. Brown 1 lb of ground beef, turkey, or chicken in a skillet.
  2. Drain the fat if needed.
  3. Stir in all 3½ tablespoons of seasoning.
  4. Add ¾ cup water and simmer 4–5 minutes until thickened.

Notes

  • For a bigger batch: multiply every ingredient by 6 to make 6 packets' worth.
  • Dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, nut-free, vegan, vegetarian.
  • Gluten-free if your chili powder is certified GF.
