Description

Smoky, sweet, and tangy with a warm bourbon finish — a homemade take on a classic hickory bourbon barbecue sauce.

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • cup molasses
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • cup distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste, optional
  • tsp liquid hickory smoke
  • 3 tbsp bourbon
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  • Whisk tomato sauce, tomato paste, molasses, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, tamarind, and water in a saucepan.
  • Whisk in onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, cayenne, and liquid smoke.
  • Simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, stirring often.
  • Stir in bourbon and simmer 8–10 more minutes.
  • Adjust seasoning, thin with water if needed, then cool and store.
