Description

This easy Christmas trifle dessert layers red velvet and green vanilla cake with a creamy cheesecake-style filling. A festive, make-ahead holiday showstopper that feeds a crowd.

Ingredients

  • 1 red velvet cake, baked and cooled
  • 1 green vanilla cake, vanilla sponge with green food coloring, baked and cooled
  • 3 cups whipped cream, or stabilized whipped topping
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Prepare both cakes according to recipe or box instructions. Cool completely, then crumble into bite-sized chunks.
  • In a bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream to make the filling.
  • In a trifle dish, layer red velvet cake, cream mixture, green vanilla cake, and cream mixture. Repeat, alternating colors, until the dish is full.
  • Finish with a top layer of cream and sprinkle both red and green cake crumbs over the top for decoration.
  • Chill at least 1 hour before serving. Serve cold.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisks

Notes

Use a clear glass trifle dish so the red and green layers show. Assemble up to 24 hours ahead — the flavors improve overnight. Store covered in the fridge up to 3 days; do not freeze.
