A bold, smoky, savory seasoning blend that nails the flavor of McCormick's Smash Seasoning at a fraction of the price. Perfect for smash burgers, fries, chicken, and more.
Ingredients
3tablespoonskosher salt
2tablespoonscoarse ground black pepper
2tablespoonsgarlic powder
1tablespoononion powder
1tablespoonsmoked paprika
2teaspoonslight brown sugar, packed
1teaspoonmustard powder
¼teaspooncayenne pepper, optional
Instructions
Measure all ingredients into a small mixing bowl.
Whisk thoroughly with a fork or small whisk for at least 30 seconds, breaking up any clumps of brown sugar so the blend is even and free-flowing.
Transfer to a clean, airtight jar or empty spice container.
Label with the name and date.
Store in a cool, dark pantry for up to 6 months.

To use on smash burgers: Form beef into 3-ounce balls. Place on a screaming-hot cast iron griddle or skillet. Smash flat with a sturdy spatula. Immediately sprinkle ¼ teaspoon of seasoning over the top of each patty. Cook 90 seconds, flip, season the other side with another ¼ teaspoon, and cook 30-60 more seconds.
Notes
Salt note: This recipe uses Diamond Crystal kosher salt. If using Morton kosher salt, reduce to 2 tablespoons. If using table salt, reduce to 4 teaspoons.
Make it spicy: Double the cayenne or add ½ teaspoon of chipotle powder.
Make it sweeter (for chicken/pork): Add an extra teaspoon of brown sugar.
Triple the batch if you grill regularly — you'll go through it fast.
