Description

A sweet, smoky, and tangy Texas-style barbecue sauce that tastes just like the bottle from Buc-ee's. Simmers in 15 minutes with pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together all the ingredients until smooth.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low. Simmer uncovered for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring often, until slightly thickened.
  • Taste and adjust with more brown sugar, vinegar, or cayenne as desired.
  • Remove from heat and let cool. Transfer to a jar or airtight container and refrigerate. The sauce will thicken as it chills.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk

Notes

  • Start with 1 teaspoon liquid smoke and add more only after tasting.
  • Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Makes about 2 cups.
