Description

Thick, smooth, slightly sweet copycat Auntie Anne's marinara dip for soft pretzels, pretzel bites, and pretzel dogs — made in one saucepan in 10 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (or 1/2 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1 cup 8 oz canned tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tsp granulated sugar, plus more to taste
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • Pinch red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  • Warm the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook 30–45 seconds until fragrant, not browned.
  • Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Whisk until smooth.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick enough to coat a spoon.
  • Taste and adjust sugar and salt. Cool 5 minutes, then serve warm with soft pretzels or pretzel bites.

Equipment

  • Small Saucepan
  • Whisk

Notes

  • Use plain tomato sauce, not crushed tomatoes or pasta sauce, for the right smooth texture.
  • The dip thickens as it cools. Thin with a splash of water if needed.
  • Keeps 1 week in the fridge or 3 months frozen.
