Description

Crispy apple flautas made in the air fryer in 15 minutes — warm cinnamon apple filling rolled in a flour tortilla, coated in cinnamon sugar, and drizzled with salted caramel. Also known as apple pie taquitos.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, about 1½ lb, peeled, cored, and diced small
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Assembly

  • 10 flour tortillas, 6-inch
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, divided
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • cup salted caramel sauce, warmed

Instructions

  • Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced apples, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Cook 5–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften.
  • Whisk the cornstarch with the cold water and stir it into the skillet. Cook 1–2 minutes until thick and glossy. Remove from heat and cool at least 10 minutes.
  • Stir the granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon together in a shallow dish. Set aside.
  • Spoon about 3 tablespoons of cooled filling down the center of each tortilla, leaving ½ inch clear at each end. Fold in the sides and roll tightly. Place seam side down.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 3 minutes.
  • Brush the flautas lightly with melted butter. Arrange seam side down in a single layer, not touching, working in batches. Air fry at 400°F for 5 minutes, flip, and cook 4–5 minutes more until deep golden and crisp.
  • Brush each hot flauta with the remaining melted butter and immediately roll in the cinnamon sugar to coat.
  • Warm the salted caramel sauce and drizzle over the flautas. Serve warm.

Equipment

  • Parchment Paper, optional
  • Cooking Spray

Notes

  • Shortcut: Replace the apple filling with one 21-ounce can of apple pie filling. Chop the slices smaller and stir in ½ teaspoon cinnamon and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Cool the filling. Hot filling steams the tortilla and prevents crisping.
  • Freeze raw on a tray, then bag for up to 3 months. Air fry from frozen at 400°F for 12–14 minutes.
  • Reheat at 350°F for 3–4 minutes in the air fryer. Do not microwave.
