Description

Crispy buttery rye, juicy beef, caramelized onions & melty cheese — diner-style comfort in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients 

For the patties:

  • 8 oz ground beef, 80/20
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the sandwich:

  • 1/2 large sweet onion, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese, or American cheese

Instructions

  • Caramelize the onions — Air fry sliced onions at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, tossing halfway, until golden and soft.
  • Season the beef — Combine ground beef with Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 2 thin patties slightly larger than your bread.
  • Cook the patties — Air fry at 370°F for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway, until cooked through (160°F internal).
  • Build the sandwich — Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, layer cheese, patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, then top slice (buttered side out).
  • Toast to golden — Air fry at 360°F for 3–4 minutes per side, until bread is crispy and cheese is fully melted. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

💡 Notes & Tips

  • Press the sandwich down lightly for even toasting
  • 80/20 beef gives the juiciest result
  • Room-temperature cheese melts before the bread over-browns
  • Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–4 minutes — never the microwave
