Description

A crisp, golden air fryer Caprese sandwich with melted fresh mozzarella, ripe tomato, and fragrant basil, finished with balsamic glaze. Fifteen minutes, and none of the sogginess that usually comes with air-fried sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread, ½ inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons butter or mayonnaise, softened
  • 6 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced and patted dry
  • 1 large beefsteak tomato, sliced ¼ inch thick
  • 8 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Lay the tomato slices on paper towel, sprinkle with salt, and let drain 10 minutes. Blot dry. Pat the mozzarella slices dry between paper towels.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  • Spread butter or mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice, covering edge to edge.
  • Place two slices butter side down. Layer mozzarella, basil leaves, tomato, then remaining mozzarella. Season with black pepper.
  • Top with the remaining bread, butter side up. Secure each sandwich with two toothpicks.
  • Air fry 4 minutes. Flip and air fry 3 to 4 minutes more, until deep golden and the cheese is melting at the edges.
  • Remove the toothpicks and rest 1 minute. Open, drizzle with balsamic glaze, close, and slice on the diagonal.

Equipment

  • Cooking Spray
  • Parchment Paper, optional
