Description

Whole apples stuffed with a cinnamon-sugar filling and topped with a woven pie crust lattice — all the flavor of apple pie, in individual servings, in 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 package prepared pie crust, cold
  • 5 medium apples, Granny Smith or Honeycrisp — 1 diced for the filling, 4 for stuffing
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar, for sprinkling

For serving (optional): vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce

Instructions

  • Stir the cornstarch into the cold water until smooth. Dice one apple and add it to a saucepan over medium-low heat with the cornstarch mixture, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Simmer 2–3 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the cold pie crust and cut it into strips about ⅓ inch wide with a pizza cutter. Preheat the air fryer to 320°F for 5 minutes.
  • Slice the tops off the remaining 4 apples. Scoop out the core and seeds with a melon baller or spoon, leaving at least ¼ inch of flesh at the bottom. Fill each cavity level with the rim.
  • Lay crust strips across each apple, straight or woven into a lattice, and trim the overhang. Whisk the egg and milk together, brush over the tops, and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  • Stand the apples upright in the air fryer basket. Cook at 320°F for 10–15 minutes, until the crust is deep golden and the filling is bubbling. Start checking at 10 minutes.
  • Serve warm with ice cream or caramel sauce, while the crust is still crisp.

Equipment

  • Parchment Paper, optional
  • Cooking Spray, optional

Notes

  • Keep the crust cold. If it softens while you work, refrigerate it for 5 minutes before lifting the strips.
  • Don't overfill. The filling expands; a level cavity prevents bubble-over.
  • Oven method: Bake assembled apples at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, until fork-tender and golden.
  • Best apples: Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Avoid McIntosh, Gala, or Red Delicious — they collapse.
  • Nutrition: recalculate for 4 servings. The existing 372 kcal figure was based on 8, so the per-apple number will roughly double.
