Description

Whip up these easy sourdough apple fritters using sourdough discard, fresh apples, and warm spices—perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sourdough Starter, active or discard
  • 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Milk, whole or your choice
  • 4 tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 cup Apples, peeled and diced; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder

Vanilla Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients and sourdough starter. Add the dry ingredients and stir until a thick batter forms.
  • Gently mix in the diced, spiced apples until evenly distributed. The batter will be thick and sticky—that’s exactly what you want.
  • Let the batter rest for 30–60 minutes. This helps develop flavor and lets the sourdough starter do a bit of magic.
  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  • Once fritters are cool enough to handle, drizzle (or dunk) them in your homemade vanilla glaze.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
