Description

A make-ahead breakfast casserole inspired by Ina Garten, this strata is rich, cheesy, and packed with savory flavor. Think of it as a baked savory bread pudding that turns simple ingredients into a brunch showstopper.

Ingredients 

  • 6 cups bread, cubed crusty, sourdough or French bread works best
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • 1 cup sausage, cooked, crumbled
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar, or Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup spinach, chopped
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing dish

Instructions

  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  • Spread cubed bread evenly in the dish.
  • Brown sausage in a skillet. Add onion, garlic, and spinach. Cook until softened, then remove from heat.
  • Spread sausage mixture over bread, then sprinkle cheese evenly on top.
  • Whisk eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until smooth.
  • Evenly pour egg mixture over everything, pressing bread gently so it absorbs liquid.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake uncovered for 50–55 minutes until golden and set in the center.
  • Let sit 10 minutes before slicing.
