Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
Lay the whole-wheat pita bread on a clean surface. Lightly brush the top side with cooking spray or olive oil. This will help the pita become crispy in the air fryer.
In a small bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasonings to your taste.
Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture over the brushed side of each pita bread. Leave a small border around the edges for the crust. Sprinkle a moderate amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
Layer on your favorite sliced vegetables and any lean protein you choose to add. Keep in mind that air frying can cook toppings quickly, so choose ingredients that require minimal cooking time.
Carefully place the assembled pita pizzas in the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches. Air fry for about 5-8 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the edges of the pita are crisp.
Once the pita pizzas are done, carefully remove them from the air fryer. Sprinkle freshly chopped basil leaves and red pepper flakes (if using) on top for added flavor and visual appeal.
