Description

A sweet, spicy, peppery, and tangy copycat of McDonald's limited-time Hot Honey Sauce — ready in 5 minutes with pantry staples.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons hot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot or Cholula
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Add the honey to a small saucepan and warm over low heat until loose and pourable, about 1 minute. Do not let it boil.
  • Stir in the red pepper flakes, cayenne, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Let the spices steep in the warm honey for 2 to 3 minutes, keeping the heat low.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the hot sauce and apple cider vinegar.
  • Taste and adjust: add more cayenne for heat, more honey to mellow it, or a teaspoon of warm water to thin.
  • Let cool for about 5 minutes to thicken slightly, then serve or transfer to a jar.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Ladle

Notes

  • For a smooth, fleck-free sauce, strain through a fine-mesh sieve before storing.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Re-loosen in warm water or short microwave bursts if it thickens.
  • For a sweet-and-hot pepper blend closer to the original, stir in a teaspoon of minced roasted red pepper or sweet chili sauce.
