Description

A 5-minute copycat of Lawry's Taco Spices & Seasonings Mix, including the cocoa powder that gives the original its depth. One batch equals one packet and seasons 1 pound of meat.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a small bowl.
  • Whisk 30 seconds until the color is even, breaking up any cocoa clumps.
  • For taco meat: brown 1 pound ground beef and drain. Add the seasoning and 2/3 cup water, then simmer uncovered 7 to 10 minutes until thickened.
  • Store extra in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place up to 6 months.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk

Notes

ultiply by 6 for a big batch and use 3 tablespoons per pound. Don't skip the cocoa — it's what makes this taste like Lawry's specifically. Reduce or omit salt for low-sodium.
