Air Fryer Chocolate Cake Mix Mug Cake

Description

A single-serving chocolate mug cake made with cake mix, applesauce, water, and chocolate chips. No eggs, no oil, no butter. Lower-calorie than typical mug cakes. Ready in 10 minutes.

Ingredients 

  • ¼ cup chocolate cake mix, Devil's Food, Triple Chocolate, or Fudge
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate chips
  • Optional: ice cream, whipped cream, extra chocolate chips, caramel drizzle, or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  • Mix in the mug. Add cake mix, applesauce, water, and chocolate chips directly to the mug. Stir thoroughly until smooth (about 30 seconds), scraping the bottom and sides. Don't fill the mug more than ⅔ full.
  • Preheat air fryer to 320°F for 3 minutes.
  • Air fry. Place mug in the basket. Cook at 320°F for 7–9 minutes.
  • Check doneness. A toothpick should come out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter. The top should be dry and slightly puffed.
  • Cool 1–2 minutes before serving. Top with ice cream, whipped cream, or extra chocolate chips if desired. Eat with a spoon directly from the mug.

Notes

  • Use unsweetened applesauce — sweetened makes the cake gummy and overly sweet.
  • Fill mug ⅔ full or less — overflow is the #1 issue with cake mix mug cakes.
  • Stir thoroughly — pockets of dry mix bake into chalky lumps.
  • Start checking at 7 minutes. Air fryers vary; better to check early.
  • Don't overcook — 10 minutes is the absolute max before texture turns rubbery.
  • Substitutes for applesauce: mashed banana, plain Greek yogurt, or pumpkin puree.
  • Storage: Best fresh. Up to 2 days refrigerated; reheat at 300°F for 90 seconds in the air fryer.
