Your mouth is watering at the thought of a grilled hot dog. The smell of onions and mustard fills your nose. You can’t wait to sink your teeth into that juicy, tasty, delicious hot dog!

Hot dogs are one of America’s most iconic foods. They’re loved by kids and adults alike in every corner of this country. Hot dogs hail from Germany, where they were initially called Frankfurters (named after the city). They’ve been eaten there since ancient times with many different toppings like sauerkraut or ketchup added for flavor. Did you know Americans eat over 150 million pounds of hotdogs yearly? That’s a lot of hot dogs!

What Are Hot Dogs?

Hot dogs are a processed food made of ground beef, pork, or other types of meat. They are usually shaped like sausages and cooked by boiling or frying. Hot dogs came to the US in the 1800s but became popular after WWII when they were served at ballparks. The type of hot dog you have will depend on where you live because there are regional variations in flavorings, condiments, and toppings.

Hot dogs can be served as a meal or snack, but typically, they are served at sporting events or in the summer when outdoor grilling becomes more common.
