What Is Acorn Squash?

Acorn squash is a type of winter squash named for its acorn-like shape. It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, which includes other squashes and gourds. The skin of acorn squash is typically dark green, with deep ridges that run the length of the squash.

The inside of the squash contains yellow-orange flesh and a small seed cavity in the center that contains flat, cream-colored seeds. Acorn squash is commonly used in cooking and can be baked, roasted, steamed, or sautéed. It has a slightly sweet and nutty flavor and is a good dietary fiber, potassium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C source.

This is one of the most popular winter squashes for Thanksgiving dinner.

Why Cook An Acorn Squash In Pressure Cooker?

Here are some reasons why you might want to cook acorn squash in a pressure cooker:

  • Saves time: Cooking an acorn squash in a pressure cooker takes less time than baking it in the oven.
  • Preserves nutrients: Pressure cooking helps retain the nutrients in the squash to enjoy all its health benefits.

Pro Tips

Here are some pro tips for cooking acorn squash in a pressure cooker:

  • Cut the squash into even pieces: If you choose to cut it into smaller pieces for easier handling, make sure they are all about the same size to ensure even cooking.
  • Pierce the skin: Before cooking, pierce the skin of the squash with a fork or a sharp knife a few times to allow steam to escape during cooking. This will help prevent the squash from exploding in the pressure cooker.
  • Add flavorings: While cooking, you can add additional flavorings to the squash, such as herbs, spices, or a splash of citrus juice, to enhance its taste.
  • Use a trivet: Placing a trivet or steaming basket at the bottom of the pressure cooker helps prevent the squash from sticking to the bottom and burning. Another option is a steamer basket or silicone sling.
  • Don’t overcook: Acorn squash can quickly become mushy and lose its texture if overcooked in a pressure cooker. Keep an eye on the cooking time, and adjust as necessary based on the size of the squash and your desired level of tenderness.

Following these pro tips, you can ensure your acorn squash is perfectly cooked and flavorful.

How To Cut An Acorn Squash

Here are the steps to cut an acorn squash:

  • Wash the acorn squash and dry it with a clean towel. Cut off the stem and bottom ends of the squash with a sturdy knife. Place the squash on a cutting board with one end flat.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the squash in half lengthwise, from top to bottom. Use a spoon, or ice cream scooper,  to scoop out the seeds and fibrous strings from the center of each half. Cut each half in half again, creating quarters. Use a vegetable peeler or knife to remove the skin of the acorn squash if desired. Cut the quarters into smaller pieces, if needed, based on your recipe requirements.

Now you’re ready to cook your acorn squash using your preferred method: roasting, baking, sautéing, or pressure cooking.
