Before I got married, I was always busily scouring the shelves for cookbooks, at any local thrift store. I also liked the idea of homemade pantry items, probably because this is the way that I was raised. We mostly bought ingredients, and then made a meal, from those ingredients. The same thing with spices, we had a stocked spice rack, probably like all of you, and we made mixtures of spices, from those.
Making your own spice blends will save you a ton of money. It will cost you some money as you start your journey, but once you are equipt with the basics, you will save a ton of money. To be honest with you, I don’t know what they put in the spice blends because there are a ton of artificial ingredients in them, and since my oldest son has an allergy, I have played it safe since his childhood and just continued making my own spices.
Today, I present you with a simple one, to start you on your journey for spice blends, this is a classical one, that not only smells awesome, it will really kick up your fall baking (or whenever you start baking with apples). As my kids can swear to, it also tastes fabulous on ice cream.
Here is some general suggestions/advice, when making your own spice blends.
- Adjust them to your taste buds, you like it really cinnamony, add more cinnamon. (Same goes with pepper, thyme, etc.)
- Invest in a spice rack, a well-stocked spice rack, will go farther in the long run, here are my suggestions
- Storing spices is important, I make a ton, throughout the year, and just store them, labeled of course, in my mini mason jars.
- I find it best to combine them in an old-fashioned pestle and mortar set up, this will also allow you to use whole spices, and mash them for ground, therefore limiting the amount of stuff you are buying.
