Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.

  • All-Purpose Flour: This flour provides the structure and base for the scones, ensuring they hold their shape while offering a tender crumb.
  • Salt: Enhances the overall flavor of the scones, balancing the savory notes and highlighting the zucchini’s natural taste.
  • Baking Powder: Acts as the leavening agent, ensuring that the scones rise beautifully and have a light, airy texture.

  • Buttermilk: Moistens the dough, helping to bind the ingredients together for a cohesive and tender scone.
  • Eggs: Works as a binder and adds richness to the dough, contributing to the scones’ structure and color.
  • Grated Zucchini: Adds moisture, nutrition, and a subtle sweetness to the scones, making them wonderfully flavorful and tender.

Pro Tips

Making zucchini scones that are both flavorful and perfectly textured can be easily achieved with a few pro tips. Here are some insights to help you craft the best zucchini scones using your air fryer:

  • Drain the Zucchini Well: Zucchini contains a lot of water, affecting the dough’s consistency. Grate it, then wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or several paper towels and squeeze firmly to remove as much moisture as possible. This step ensures your scones don’t become too wet.
  • Cold Ingredients: Use cold butter and cold milk. The cold butter will melt as it cooks, creating steam pockets contributing to a flakier scone. Cold milk helps keep the butter from melting before it’s in the air fryer.
  • Don’t Overmix the Dough: Mix the dough until just combined. Overworking the dough can activate the gluten in the flour, leading to tough scones. A gentle touch results in lighter, flakier scones.
  • Parchment Paper Is Your Friend: Lining the air fryer basket with parchment paper prevents sticking and allows for easy removal of the scones. Ensure it doesn’t cover all the venting holes for proper air circulation.
  • Space Them Out: Place the scones slightly apart in the air fryer basket to avoid overcrowding. This allows hot air to circulate freely, ensuring the scones cook evenly and develop a nice, golden crust.
  • Use an Egg Wash: Brushing the scones with an egg wash before air frying gives them a beautiful golden sheen and enhances their flavor.
  • Adjust Cooking Times as Needed: Air fryers can vary in their cooking efficiency, so use the cooking time as a guideline and adjust as needed. The scones are done when they are golden brown and firm to the touch.
  • Cool Before Serving: Let the scones cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. This brief cooling period helps them set and makes them easier to handle.
  • Experiment with Flavors: While zucchini provides moisture and a subtle flavor, feel free to add herbs like dill, chives, or parsley to the dough for an extra flavor boost. Cheese varieties can also be mixed and matched based on your preference.

Keep these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to making delicious, savory zucchini scones in your air fryer. Whether you’re serving them for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack, they’re sure to be a hit.

Storing

The best way to store uneaten scones after baking is to wrap them with saran wrap and store them in either the pantry or refrigerator.

  • To Freeze Unbaked Scones, Cut them into wedges, wrap each scone tightly, and place them in the freezer. Then, to make them in the air fryer from frozen, add about four more minutes to the time in the bottom recipe.
  • Freezing Cooked Scones: If you freeze after air frying, just let the scones come to room temperature, and then place them in an airtight container or wrap them in saran wrap. They will stay in the freezer for about one month. To use, remove it from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator or leave it on the counter to come to room temperature.
