CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHRIMP

The options for buying shrimp can be overwhelming. Do you buy fresh or frozen? What about the size of the shrimp? The color? Whether they are peeled and deveined? It’s enough to make your head spin!

I prefer to use fresh shrimp for this recipe since threading the shrimp through the skewer is easier. If you only have frozen shrimp, you can easily thaw it in cold water before assembling the skewers.

You can either use large, jumbo, or colossal shrimp. I recommend purchasing deveined and shelled since this will eliminate some of the prep work for you.

What does shrimp on the barbie mean?

It’s a common misconception that “shrimp on the barbie” means shrimp cooked on a skewer over an open fire. It is more likely to refer to large prawns, sometimes called shrimp or crayfish, and can be grilled whole. The term is Australian and was popularized by the 1981 film “Crocodile Dundee.”

Shrimp on the grill is the literal translation of the common phrase.

What do they call shrimp in England?

What do they call shrimp in England? The answer might surprise you. In the United States, we often refer to shrimp as a seafood dish typically served with cocktail sauce or garlic butter and lemon juice. In other parts of the world, such as England, prawns can be eaten raw with a bit of mayonnaise.

Are shrimp and prawns the same thing?

While shrimp and prawns are often found in the same context, they are very different. Shrimp are harvested from saltwater bodies, while prawns can be harvested from freshwater or saltwater. The difference between these two seafood staples is that shrimp have a head full of hard shells on their back, while prawns do not.
