Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the end of the post, as well as the nutritional information.

  • French Loaf Bread or Thick-Sliced Bread: Choose sturdy, thick-sliced bread, such as Texas Toast, brioche, or challah, to hold up well to the pumpkin custard without falling apart.
  • Eggs: Act as the binding agent for the French toast batter, ensuring that the pumpkin and spices adhere well to the bread
  • Milk: Milk provides the liquid base for the custard, contributing to its creamy texture and helping to soften the bread. You can use oat milk or almond milk.
  • Ground Cinnamon: For added flavor.
  • Granulated Sugar or Brown Sugar: Offers a hint of molasses sweetness that complements the pumpkin and spices, rounding out the flavors beautifully.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: This spice mix, which combines cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, adds a cozy warmth and depth of flavor synonymous with autumn.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Adds a creamy texture and rich, autumnal flavor to the French toast, infusing each slice with the quintessential taste of fall.
  • Butter: Used to grease the air fryer basket, butter ensures the French toast cooks to golden perfection without sticking
  • Powdered Sugar or Maple Syrup: Sprinkle or drizzle over the finished French toast for a touch of natural sweetness that complements the pumpkin flavor.

Pro Tips

Elevate your Air Fryer Pumpkin French Toast with these pro tips, ensuring a perfectly spiced, crisply textured, and utterly delicious breakfast experience that celebrates the essence of fall.

  • Bread Selection: Opt for day-old brioche or challah bread. Their rich, tender textures absorb the pumpkin mixture well and hold up during cooking, providing a luxurious mouthfeel.
  • Pumpkin Puree Thickness: If your pumpkin puree is particularly watery, consider draining it on a paper towel or cheesecloth for a few minutes. A thicker puree ensures the batter has a concentrated pumpkin flavor and the right consistency for coating the bread.
  • Even Soaking: To ensure an even soak without making the bread too soggy, dip each slice into the pumpkin mixture, coating every part. Let excess batter drip off before placing the bread in the air fryer.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Always preheat your air fryer for best results. A preheated air fryer ensures immediate cooking upon contact, which helps achieve a crispy exterior.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Adequate space around each slice of French toast ensures even air circulation and cooking.
  • Flipping Technique: Use a thin spatula to flip the French toast midway through cooking. This ensures the slices cook evenly on both sides and develop a delightful crispness.
  • Customizing Sweetness: Adjust the sweetness of your batter by increasing or decreasing the amount of brown sugar based on your preference. Remember, the maple syrup served on top will also add sweetness.
  • Serving Suggestions: Experiment with toppings. In addition to maple syrup, consider garnishing with toasted pecans, peanut butter, a dollop of whipped cream, or a light dusting of powdered sugar and extra pumpkin pie spice for a festive touch.
  • Quick Cleanup: Line the air fryer basket with perforated parchment paper designed for air fryers to make cleanup easier. The paper should not cover the edges of the slices to allow for proper airflow.
  • Leftover Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat them in the toaster or air fryer for a quick and delicious breakfast. You can also freeze them and reheat them directly from frozen.

Following these pro tips, you can master the art of making Pumpkin French Toast in your air fryer, creating a fall breakfast that’s as comforting and cozy as it is flavorful and festive.

Air Fryer Pumpkin French Toast

Faq’s

Can I use canned pumpkin pie mix instead of pumpkin puree? This recipe is best made with pure pumpkin puree. The pumpkin pie mix contains added sugars and spices, affecting flavor balance. If you only have pie mix, reduce or omit the added sugar and spices from the recipe.

What if my air fryer doesn’t have a preheat setting? If your air fryer has no specific preheat setting, turn it on to the desired cooking temperature for about 3-5 minutes before adding your French toast.

Can I make this recipe gluten-free? Absolutely! Substitute your favorite gluten-free bread for the brioche, thick white bread, or challah. Be mindful that gluten-free breads may vary in texture and absorption, so adjust soaking times as needed. Sturdy bread works best for this recipe.

How do I prevent the French toast from sticking to the air fryer basket? Lightly grease the basket with butter or non-stick spray. To avoid sticking and to ease cleanup, you can use parchment paper with holes designed specifically for air fryers. Use parchment paper on the bottom of the air fryer tray for an air fryer oven.

Can I add nuts or fruits to the batter? While adding nuts or fruits directly to the batter could cause uneven cooking, you can undoubtedly sprinkle them on top of the French toast after cooking or add them to the air fryer basket during the last few minutes of cooking time.

How do I store leftovers? Leftover air-fried pumpkin French toast can be stored in an airtight storage container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer or toaster before serving for the best texture.

Can this recipe be doubled? Yes, you can easily double it. Just remember to cook the French toast in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket and ensure each piece cooks evenly and gets crispy.

Can I freeze cooked pumpkin French toast? Cooked pumpkin French toast freezes well. Allow the slices to cool, then freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag or container. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer or toaster for a quick breakfast.

How do I know when the French toast is done cooking? It should be golden brown and crispy on the outside. The total cooking time might vary depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of your bread slices.

Can I use milk alternatives in the batter? Yes, milk alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk work well in this recipe. They can add subtle flavor differences and are great for those avoiding dairy.

Equipment

  • Cooking Spray

Notes

You can freeze some of the French toast sticks for a quick and easy breakfast later. Allow them to cool and then place them in plastic wrap or an airtight bag before freezing. When reheating – place them in the air fryer, oven, or microwave until heated throughout!

These sticks are perfect just sprinkled with more cinnamon sugar (aka churro style), dusted with powdered sugar, or drizzled with maple syrup!

I used the soft French bread from the grocery store, you can also use the Italian bread or anything that is large and soft. Challah or Brioche work great as well! I used the whole loaf and made them in batches of 8 each.

Because air fryers can vary in cooking time be sure to keep an eye on them so they don’t overcook!!
