What Is Flat Iron Steak?

If you’re an avid meat-eater, chances are you’ve heard of a Flank Steak. However, if you’re not sure what the difference is between this cut and a Flat Iron steak, then it’s time to find out!

Both cuts come from the cow’s abdominal muscles, but they differ in shape and size. A flank steak is wider than long, while a flat iron steak is longer than it is wide. The best way to tell them apart? If there isn’t a noticeable seam running down the middle of your meat, then congratulations! You’ve found yourself a flat iron steak!

Tips For Making The Best Air Fryer Flat Iron Steak

  • Let your steak come room temperature before adding your steak to the air fryer.
  • Preheat your air fryer for a few minutes until your air fryer basket or oven is hot enough that you will get a great sear on the steak. Remember to check your owner’s manual for the proper preheating method for your air fryer.
  • Season your steak, and you can add all of your favorite seasonings or just as simple steak seasoning.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Otherwise, you will not get a fabulous and even cooked steak.
  • After removing them from the air fryer, let your steak rest for only about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Check your steak’s internal temperature with a meat thermometer for the best steak since everyone likes them cooked slightly differently.

Steak Temperature

The USDA’s recommendation for meat temperature is as follows, remember for best results, take the temperature in the thickest part of the steak with a meat thermometer.

  • Medium-Rare: 135°F

Is flat iron steak tender?

What is a flat iron steak? Flat Iron steaks are tender, flavorful, and eye appealing. They’re the perfect cut for grilling, pan-searing, or even air frying.

One of the reasons the flat iron steak is so tender is that there is a lot of marbling throughout the steak. When this is air fried up, the fat melts and tenderizes the steak—creating a juicy and tender piece of steak.

Are flat iron steak and flank steak the same?

If you are a diehard steak lover, then you might have wondered if the flat iron steak and flank steak are the same. While they look similar in shape, they taste different.

A flat iron steak has a more robust beef flavor than a flank steak because it is more marbled with fat. It also has less connective tissue, which makes it easier to chew and cook. On the other hand, a flank steak has a much higher collagen content, giving it that firm texture when cooked well done or medium-well done, so keep this in mind when cooking your next meal!

Can another cut of beef be used for this recipe?

Yes, this recipe will work with any cut of steak that you want to air fry.
