This is one of the most requested recipes for me to make. I get about ten emails a week asking me to prepare liver and onions in the air fryer. So, yesterday I was at the butcher shop. I found a great package of beef liver, so I quickly grabbed that and a bag of onions. I knew exactly what I would be making while my kids were doing school: today’s project, Air Fryer Liver and Onions.
This is not a complicated recipe; it is very straightforward as most recipes. I made this recipe twice and figured out how to get the best result.
If you have never eaten liver and onions, there are only two ways that I know how to make liver and onions battered and non-battered. I started with the unbattered version since that’s what everyone seemed to be looking for a recipe for.
It is simple, traditionally prepared in a cast-iron skillet or griddle, depending on where you grew up. It was always served with onions. The seasonings were pretty easy, and I used salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and some dry mustard.
There are a few ways in the United States that you purchase liver. It comes in either chicken liver, beef liver, veal liver, or baby beef liver. I do not recommend using the regular beef liver as it is very tough.

- 1 1/2 pound baby calves liver
- 2 large onions, sliced into rings
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder

- Toss the onions into an air fryer basket.
- Season your liver with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard, and smoked paprika. Season on both sides.
- Place the liver on top of the onions in the basket. And set the temperature to 370 degrees F, for 7 minutes.

This is a GREAT recipe and the instructions are clear and concise. I’ve made this 4 times and LOVE it! My mom used to make super good liver and onions and this is right up there with hers. Thanks so much!

Didn’t expect to find this old fashioned recipe for an air fryer but it worked well. For the last four minutes for the onions I added some bacon. Very enjoyable

Made this yesterday as my first recipe in my new Cosori Dual Blaze air fryer. It was some of the best liver and onions I have had. Thanks so much for the recipe.
Sally

This was delicious! Mine seemed a little spicy but it might have been my error. I’m going to make it again today and see.
Made some rice and gravy on the side.

Followed recipe exactly Enjoyed it very much. But next time will use a red onion and cook the onion for 4 mins first then add and cook the liver this will save me from keeping the cooked liver warm.

Not much can beat liver and onions in a rich gravy for taste. In Britain, it often accompanies streaky bacon and sausages, typically alongside mashed potatoes, with either cabbage or peas. Maybe, as you say, beef liver is tough in the USA. Here in Britain, where we call it ox liver, I’ve always found it tender and full of flavour—and way cheaper than calf’s liver. Most male cattle don’t live into old age anyway, so the calf/ox divide may often be academic.
Sally
Loved this recipe!
Followed it exactly except when I put the onions in I went ahead and cooked them for 4 minutes then added the liver on top and cooked for 7 minutes.
So easy and delicious.

This sounds great. Unfortunately, onions give me horrible heartburn. Is there anything else I could substitute for the onion? Thank you for your help.
Diane Wray
How about trying some bacon and mushrooms? They could work well together.
Sally
I just made this for the first time.
It is so good!
I even used some of the juice.
Put in 1/2 of the seasonings,

I was impressed! Tender and flavorful. The onions were still crunchy. Seasonings were just right. Will definitely make again.

Are the spice measurements for both the liver and onions or for each?
Brent C Eamer
I went ahead and made it; splitting the spice between the onion and liver. I upped the salt to 1 tsp, so it was 6 tsp total spice, 3 for onion 3 for liver.
Added 5 minutes to the recipe, Set it to 15, 3 to warm, 12 cooking time then the 4 min for onions after
Unequivocally, the best liver I’ve ever had, I was worried about it drying out but it was moist and tender and the onions mildly crisped. A keeper, thank you
