Skirt steak is a cut of beef that can be cooked in many different ways. It’s very flavorful, but because it has no fat or marbling, it doesn’t produce much juice during cooking. For this reason, skirt steak often needs to be pan-seared first to create the “crust” before finishing in the air fryer.

Air Fryers are an excellent way to cook skirt steak with minimal oil.

If you have been wondering how to cook skirt Steak, this is a great and full-proof method, but I do recommend searing in a skillet first, which will probably surprise you all, but the results are really worth the extra step!

What is Skirt Steak?

Skirt steak is a cut of beef from the plate, which is located between the rib and sirloin cuts. Skirt steaks are flavorful but tough cuts that require long, slow cooking to break down the muscle fibers. They’re often used for fajitas or carne asada due to their ability to withstand high heat without drying out.

Skirt steak is also known as arrachera in Spanish-speaking countries. It’s one of my favorite meats because it has so much flavor! I’m sharing some tips on how you can cook skirt steak for your next meal at home.

What’s the Difference Between Skirt Steak and Flank Steak?

Skirt Steak and Flank Steak are both a cut of beef from the diaphragm muscles. Skirt steak comes from the abdominal area, while flank steak is from the lower chest area. They have similar flavor profiles but skirt steak has more fat content and can be tougher if not cooked properly. Skirt steaks are usually sold as whole pieces, while flank steaks come in halves or thirds for easier cooking.

Should You Marinate Skirt Steak?

A lot of people ask me if they should marinate skirt steak before cooking it. Do you need to? It depends on what you are using the steak for. If you plan on a plain steak dinner, no, but if you are planning to use the meat in a dish like tacos or fajitas where it will be cooked with other ingredients and sauces, then yes! Marinating can enhance flavors and tenderize the meat.
