What Are Linzer Cookies?

If you have ever been to a bakery, these are very popular cookies.

This famous cookie originated in Austria, and it is a derivative of the famous Linzer Torte. A Linzer Torte, which I will put on my items to make in the air fryer, is a shortcake made of almonds, and at the center of the torte is a topping of fruit preserves and sliced nuts.

Linzer cookies are shortbread cookies that are sandwich cookies with jam filling. They are almost like a miniature version of the Linzer Torte. They, too, are made with a shortbread crust, topped with jam, and then usually dusted with powdered sugar.

Why You Will Love Making Linzer Cookies In Air Fryer

Making Linzer Cookies in an air fryer is a delightful twist on the traditional way of baking these classic treats, offering a range of benefits that make the process enjoyable and the results even more satisfying. Here’s why you’ll love making Linzer Cookies in your air fryer:

  • Quick Baking Time: The air fryer heats up quickly and bakes the cookies efficiently, significantly reducing the cooking time compared to a conventional oven. This means you can enjoy these delightful cookies even faster.
  • Even Cooking: Thanks to the circulating hot air, Linzer Cookies come out evenly baked with a perfectly tender texture. The air fryer’s cooking method ensures the edges are nicely crisp while keeping the center slightly soft, just as a Linzer Cookie should be.
  • Less Butter Needed: When baking in an air fryer, you might reduce the amount of butter typically required for cookies, making them slightly healthier without compromising taste or texture.
  • Minimal Mess: Baking cookies in an air fryer often results in less mess than using an oven. Using parchment paper or silicone mats designed for air fryers makes cleanup a breeze.
  • Ideal for Small Batches: The compact air fryer makes it perfect for baking small batches of Linzer Cookies, ensuring every cookie is freshly baked and enjoyed at its best.
  • Experiment with Fillings: Linzer Cookies are known for their distinctive jam-filled centers, but using an air fryer allows for easy experimentation with different fillings, such as chocolate, lemon curd, or various fruit jams, without affecting the baking process.
  • No Overheating the Kitchen: Unlike traditional ovens, air fryers don’t heat up the kitchen, making it comfortable to bake Linzer Cookies any time of the year, even on hot summer days.
  • Engaging and Rewarding: Cutting out the cookies, filling them with jam, and watching them bake to perfection in the air fryer is both fun and rewarding, making for an enjoyable baking experience.

Making Linzer Cookies in an air fryer simplifies the baking process and offers a creative and efficient way to enjoy this beloved cookie. It is a perfect treat for holidays, special occasions, or as a delightful addition to your cookie repertoire.

  • Scrape down the sides and mix again for a few seconds to ensure it’s incorporated.

Roll and Cut:

  • The dough will be crumbly.
  • Knead it a few times with your hands to form a dough ball.

  • Take the cookie dough out of the refrigerator and let it sit on the counter for about 5-10 minutes until softened (just enough to roll it out).
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured, clean work surface to 1/8th of an inch thick. Using a 2.5-inch cookie cutter, cut out the cookies.
  • Use another small cookie cutter to cut out a shape for the tops of the sandwich cookies. Make sure you have an equal amount of tops to bottoms.
  • Place the cookies, not touching directly, into the grates of the air fryer basket. You can also use parchment paper liners. Air fry for 4-5 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Let cool entirely on a wire rack.

Recipe Variations

Air Fryer Linzer Cookies offer a delightful canvas for culinary creativity, allowing you to experiment with various flavors and textures. Here are some delicious variations to try, ensuring your cookie repertoire remains fresh and exciting:

  • Chocolate Dough Variation: Add cocoa powder to the dough mixture for a chocolate twist on the classic Linzer cookie. The rich chocolate flavor pairs wonderfully with raspberry or cherry jam, creating a decadent treat.
  • Nut-Free Dough: If you have nut allergies, substitute the almond flour with oat flour or all-purpose flour. If the dough is too dry, adjust the texture with a little more butter or a splash of milk.
  • Spiced Dough: Incorporate spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove into the dough for a warm, spiced cookie that’s perfect for the holiday season. These flavors complement apple or pumpkin jam fillings beautifully.
  • Citrus Zest Flavored Dough: Add lemon, orange, or lime zest to the dough for a citrusy kick. The bright zest pairs nicely with berry jams, offering a refreshing twist on the traditional recipe.
  • Seedless Jam Fillings: Opt for seedless versions of your favorite jams for a smoother filling. Seedless raspberry or blackberry jam provides the classic Linzer cookie taste without the seeds.
  • Chocolate Ganache Filling: Fill the cookies with chocolate ganache for a luxurious alternative to jam. This variation is especially appealing for chocolate lovers and pairs well with the chocolate dough variation.
  • Dulce de Leche Filling: Use dulce de leche instead of jam for a rich, caramel-filled Linzer cookie. The creamy sweetness of dulce de leche adds a decadent touch to the cookies.
  • Lemon Curd Filling: For a tangy twist, fill the cookies with lemon curd. The sharpness of the lemon curd contrasts beautifully with the sweet, buttery cookie dough.
  • Matcha Dough: Incorporate matcha powder into the dough for an earthy flavor and vibrant green color. Matcha dough pairs well with white chocolate ganache or sweet red bean paste fillings, offering a unique take on the classic Linzer.
  • Gluten-Free Dough: Make the dough gluten-free by using a suitable gluten-free flour blend in place of all-purpose flour. Ensure the blend is appropriate for cookies to maintain the desired texture.

Each of these variations on Air Fryer Linzer Cookies allows you to personalize the cookies to suit any occasion or preference. Experimenting with different dough flavors, fillings, and textures can turn a classic recipe into a new favorite, showcasing the versatility and joy of baking.

Pro Tips

Crafting Linzer Cookies in an air fryer brings a delightful twist to this traditional treat. Here are some pro tips to ensure your Linzer cookies are as delicious as they are beautiful:

  • Chill the Dough: Always chill your dough before rolling and cutting. This makes it easier to handle and helps maintain the shape of the cookies during the air frying process.
  • Use Parchment Paper: To prevent sticking and ensure easy removal, place a small piece of parchment paper in the air fryer basket under the cookies. Just make sure it doesn’t cover all the air flow holes.
  • Uniform Thickness: Roll the dough to an even thickness to ensure uniform cooking. Cookies of the same thickness will cook at the same rate, preventing some from burning while others remain doughy.
  • Keep an Eye on Them: Air fryer models can vary greatly, so start checking your cookies for doneness a few minutes earlier than the recipe suggests. Linzer cookies should be lightly golden but not too dark.
  • Cool Before Filling: Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before adding the jam filling. This prevents the jam from melting and the cookies from becoming soggy.
  • Sift Powdered Sugar First: For a professional finish, sift powdered sugar onto the top cookies (those with the cut-outs) before assembling the Linzer cookies. This ensures a clean look without sugar on the jam.
  • Thicken Your Jam: If your jam is runny, consider thickening it with a little cornstarch or using a thicker preserve to prevent it from oozing out the sides after the cookies are assembled.
  • Be Gentle: When assembling, gently press the two halves together. Too much pressure can cause the cookies to crack or the jam to spill out the sides.
  • Storage: Store the assembled Linzer cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They typically taste better the next day after the flavors have had time to meld.
  • Experiment with Flavors: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different jam flavors or even chocolate spreads for a unique twist on the classic Linzer cookie.

Following these tips will help you master the art of making Linzer Cookies in an air fryer, combining the convenience of modern cooking with the timeless appeal of this festive treat.

Air Fryer Linzer Cookies

Faq’s

Can I use store-bought dough for Linzer Cookies? Yes, you can if you’re short on time or prefer convenience. However, homemade dough specifically for Linzer cookies is recommended for authentic flavor and texture.

How do I prevent the cookies from flying around in the air fryer? Place the cookies carefully in the basket without overcrowding to prevent them from moving due to air circulation. Parchment paper with holes can also help anchor them down while allowing airflow.

Can I make the dough ahead of time? Absolutely! Linzer cookie dough benefits from chilling, so making it ahead of time works well. You can refrigerate the dough for up to 3 days or freeze it for longer storage. Just let it thaw slightly for easier rolling.

How thin should I roll out the dough? For optimal texture, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. This thickness ensures the cookies are sturdy enough to sandwich together without being too dense or doughy.

What if I don’t have Linzer cookie cutters? If you don’t have specific Linzer cookie cutters, you can use any cookie cutter for the base and a smaller shape (such as a piping tip or a small cutter) to create the cut-out in the center of the top cookies.

How do I ensure the powdered sugar doesn’t dissolve into the jam? Sift the powdered sugar over the top halves of the cookies (those with the cut-outs) before assembling them with the jam-filled bottoms. This method keeps the sugar from directly contacting the jam and dissolving.

Can I use different fillings besides jam? Certainly! While traditional Linzer cookies are filled with raspberry or apricot jam, you can experiment with other fillings like lemon curd, chocolate hazelnut spread, or even dulce de leche for a twist.

How long do Linzer cookies last? Assembled Linzer cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. They can also be kept in the refrigerator for longer storage, though they are best enjoyed at room temperature.

Can I freeze Linzer cookies? Yes, Linzer cookies freeze well, either assembled or unassembled. To freeze, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
