Air Fryer Blueberry Pie is tonight’s dessert. It happens to be my favorite pie, too. When I was a child, we could never get one because I was the only one who liked it, so now that I am an adult, I get to buy what I want. Or, more importantly, I bake what I want.

This is one of the easiest recipes you can bake in the air fryer; the only thing you need to figure out is the timing, and you can make this pie in any flavor.

If you want to make a homemade pie crust, that is great. I use a premade crust, but the recipe would work the same.

Can You Cook A Whole Pie In Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook a whole pie in an air fryer! Air fryers are versatile kitchen gadgets that circulate hot air around the food, allowing for efficient and even cooking. When making a pie in an air fryer, there are a few key points to consider:

  • Size of the Pie: Ensure the pie tin or dish fits comfortably inside the air fryer without touching the sides. Smaller pies, like those meant for 1-2 servings, are often a perfect fit for standard air fryers.
  • Temperature: Generally, you’ll want to reduce the conventional oven baking temperature by about 25°F. So, if a recipe calls for baking at 375°F in a regular oven, set your air fryer to 350°F.
  • Cooking Time: The cooking time might be slightly shorter in an air fryer than in a traditional oven. Checking for doneness a bit earlier than the original recipe suggests is essential.
  • Preventing Over-Browning: If the top of the pie starts browning too quickly, you can place a piece of aluminum foil over the top to prevent further browning while the pie continues to cook.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the air fryer has proper ventilation and that the pie isn’t blocking the airflow. This ensures even cooking.
  • Cooling: After cooking, let the pie sit for a while to set, just as you would if you baked it in a traditional oven.

Remember, every air fryer can vary slightly in heat distribution and cooking times, so it’s always a good idea to monitor your pie, especially the first time you try the recipe in the air fryer.

Pro Tips For Cooking A Whole Blueberry Pie In Air Fryer

  • Preheat the Air Fryer: While many air fryers boast of not needing preheating, when baking pies, a short preheat helps ensure consistent results. Preheat for about 3-5 minutes.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that your air fryer has enough ventilation around it. Pies can generate steam, and a good flow of air prevents condensation from making the crust soggy.
  • Don’t Overfill: While it might be tempting to add extra filling, refrain from doing so. Overfilling can cause the pie to overflow, creating a mess in the air fryer and potentially resulting in uneven cooking.
  • Rotate for Even Cooking: Halfway through the cooking time, rotate the pie to ensure an even golden crust. Depending on your air fryer model, one side might cook faster than the other.
  • Shielding the Edges: If you notice the edges of your pie browning too quickly, use a foil ring to protect them. This allows the center to cook without the edges becoming too dark.
  • Monitor Closely: Every air fryer can differ slightly in temperature regulation. On your first try, monitor the pie closely to avoid overcooking or burning.
  • Cooling is Key: After cooking, let the pie sit for a while. This allows the filling to set and makes slicing easier. Plus, the flavors meld and develop further as it cools.
  • Clean After Each Use: Fruit pies can sometimes bubble over, even if not overfilled. To ensure consistent results every time and prevent smoke or burnt tastes, clean your air fryer after each pie cooking session.
  • Consider Pie Size: Ensure that the pie tin or dish you’re using fits comfortably in the air fryer basket without touching the sides. This will ensure proper air circulation and even cooking.
  • Temperature Check: If you’re not sure whether the pie is done, insert a thermometer into the center of the pie. The filling should reach a temperature of around 175°F to 180°F.

How To Make A Whole Blueberry Pie WIth Homemade Pie Filling In Air Fryer

To embark on a culinary journey with an air fryer blueberry pie, begin by preparing your homemade blueberry pie filling. Combine fresh blueberries with sugar, a dash of lemon zest, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a touch of cornstarch in a saucepan. Heat this mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously until it thickens. Once thickened, set aside to cool. While it cools, roll out your pie crust, ensuring it fits comfortably within the dimensions of your air fryer basket. Place one crust into a pie tin, prick the base with a fork, and pour in the cooled blueberry filling, spreading it evenly.

For the air frying process, preheat your air fryer to 320°F. If your pie has a top crust, place it over the blueberry filling, crimping the edges to seal and making small slits on the top for steam to escape. Gently place the pie into the air fryer basket. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Remember to check periodically to ensure it doesn’t overcook. Once done, remove the pie from the air fryer and let it cool on a wire rack, allowing the filling to set further. Dive in and enjoy the harmony of a flaky crust and luscious blueberry center, all crisped to perfection in an air fryer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cooking A Whole Blueberry Pie In Air Fryer

Can I use store-bought pie filling? Absolutely! If you’re short on time or ingredients, using store-bought pie filling is a convenient alternative. Just ensure it’s well-stirred before adding it to the pie crust.

What size of pie can fit in an air fryer? The pie size will depend on your air fryer’s capacity. Most standard air fryers can comfortably accommodate a pie that is 6 to 8 inches in diameter.

Do I need to adjust the cooking time for different pie sizes? Yes, smaller pies might cook faster, so it’s important to frequently check to prevent overcooking. Conversely, larger pies may need a few extra minutes.

Why is my pie crust not browning evenly? Due to the compact nature of air fryers, heat might not distribute evenly across the pie. Rotate your pie halfway through cooking to achieve a more uniform golden-brown crust.

Can I use other fruits for the pie filling? Definitely! While this recipe focuses on blueberries, you can substitute with other fruits like apples, cherries, or peaches. Just adjust the sugar and thickening agent accordingly.

Do I need to let the pie rest after air frying? Yes, allowing the pie to rest helps the filling set further and makes for cleaner slices. It’s recommended to wait at least 15 minutes before serving.

Is preheating the air fryer necessary? While some recipes might not require it, preheating helps achieve a crispier and well-browned crust, similar to traditional oven baking.

The pie crust is browning too quickly. What should I do? If you notice the crust browning too rapidly, reduce the air fryer temperature by 25°F and increase the cooking time slightly.
