What Is Skillet Bread?

Skillet bread is a recipe that dates back to the 1920s. It’s also known as skillet cake, cornbread, and pan bread. Traditionally made in cast iron skillets, this dish is crispy on top with a moist interior. This bread can be served plain or topped with honey or syrup for breakfast or dessert.

This is an easy recipe for you to make in the air fryer!

How To Make Air Fryer Skillet Bread

Air Fryer Skillet Bread

In a glass or measuring cup, add 1/2 cup of warm water, the yeast package, and one tablespoon of sugar. Within 5 minutes, the yeast should start to foam, and if it does not continue, it means that the yeast is old or expired. This recipe will not work. After 5 minutes, notice the foam.

Add the olive oil and the rest of the water, mix well. Pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl, and then add the flour. Mix until the ball forms. And all of the dough is together.

Use a tablespoon of olive oil and coat a small bowl. Put your dough into the bowl. Cover with a kitchen towel or paper towel and wait 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.

Grease a skillet (or any air fryer safe pan) and set in 400 degrees F, air fryer setting, for about 4 minutes. Then put the dough into the prepared pan (be careful remember the pan is hot)

Brush the top of the dough with olive oil. Set in the air fryer at 400 degrees F, air fryer setting, for 10 to 12 minutes.

WHAT IS THE BEST YEAST TO USE?

For this recipe and most of my bread recipes, I use Instant Dry Yeast, found in most American grocery stores. The Instant Dry Yeast is the same as rapid rise yeast, quick yeast, or instant yeast.

WHAT IS INSTANT DRY YEAST?

Since the Instant Dry Yesast’s molecules are smaller, you will notice the bread rises faster than other types of yeast.

Remember, if your yeast does not require proof, the bread will never rise, so always check your expiration date on the yeast before using it in any recipe.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER SKILLET BREAD:

There are two different ways to store leftover skillet bread, both with their pros and cons.

The first option is to wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place all the details together in a large freezer bag for storage. This method will keep your bread fresh for up to three days.

The second option is to slice each piece into quarters (if not already sliced) and then stack them on top of one another before wrapping them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

HOW TO FREEZE SKILLET BREAD:

Hate to waste food? Here is how you can freeze leftover skillet bread and reheat it for a quick and easy treat or air fryer side dish.

Skillet bread is so delicious, but there are always leftovers! Freeze the remaining loaf in an airtight bag or container for up to three months. It will stay fresh and ready for your next meal. Reheat it by putting the frozen skillet bread into a 350°F oven on a baking sheet until warm, about 15-20 minutes, depending on your oven settings.
