Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.

  • Pie Dough or Puff Pastry Sheets: These provide the light, flaky base for our apple tarts, effortlessly elevating the dessert with a buttery and crisp texture.

  • Apples: The star ingredient, apples, gives our tarts their juicy and sweet filling. Choose a baking-friendly variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor.

  • Granulated Sugar or Brown Sugar: Adding the right touch of sweetness, sugar balances the tartness of the apples and enhances their natural flavors.

  • Ground Cinnamon: A classic pairing with apples, cinnamon introduces warmth and a spicy depth to our tarts.

  • Lemon Juice: A splash of lemon juice prevents the apple slices from browning and adds a hint of tangy freshness to the filling.

  • Egg (for egg wash): Brushing the tarts with an egg wash before air frying ensures a beautiful golden-brown finish.

  • Powdered Sugar (optional): A light dusting of powdered sugar just before serving makes the tarts look even more tempting and adds an extra sweet note.

Pro Tips For Cooking Apple Tarts In Air Fryer

  • Thin Slices: When preparing the apples, aim for thin and even slices. This ensures they cook uniformly and become tender within the short cooking time in the air fryer.
  • Don’t Overstuff: While it might be tempting to pile on the apple filling, less is more. Overstuffing can result in the pastry not sealing properly, leading to leaks during cooking.
  • Egg Wash: Don’t skip the egg wash. It provides a lovely golden sheen to the tarts, making them look bakery-perfect.
  • Poke Holes: Before cooking, poke a few small holes in the top of the tarts with a fork. This allows steam to escape and prevents them from puffing up too much.
  • Rotate and Monitor: Depending on the size of your air fryer and the number of tarts, you might need to cook in batches. Ensure even cooking by rotating the tarts halfway through the cooking time.
  • Temperature Check: Air fryers can vary, so monitor the tarts during your first batch to find the optimal cooking time and temperature for your specific model.
  • Cooling Time: Allow the tarts to cool for a few minutes after removing them from the air fryer. This helps the filling to set slightly and makes them easier to handle.
  • Flavor Variations: While these tips are for apple tarts, don’t be afraid to experiment with other fruits like pears or berries, or even add a sprinkle of nutmeg or a drizzle of caramel for additional flavor.

FAQ’s About Air Fryer Apple Tarts

Can I use homemade pastry dough instead of store-bought?

Absolutely! Homemade pastry dough can provide a richer flavor and texture. Just ensure it’s rolled out to the recommended thickness and is chilled before using.

How do I store leftover apple tarts?

Store any leftover apple tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, refrigerate them, and they can last for up to 5 days.

Can I freeze air fryer apple tarts for later?

Yes, you can freeze them either before or after air frying. If freezing before, place the uncooked tarts on a baking sheet in the freezer until solid, then transfer to a zip-top bag. When ready to eat, cook directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

Can I use other fruit fillings in this recipe?

Absolutely! Feel free to substitute apples with pears, berries, or even a mix of fruits. The cooking time may vary slightly based on the moisture content of the fruit.

My tarts burst open while cooking. What did I do wrong?

This can happen if the tarts are overstuffed or if the edges aren’t sealed properly. Make sure to leave enough of a border around the edge when adding the filling and press the edges firmly to seal.

How do I ensure the bottom of the tarts get crispy?

Ensuring there is enough space between each tart in the air fryer basket can help the hot air circulate better, making the bottoms crispy. Additionally, preheating the air fryer can also help.

Can I glaze or add toppings to my apple tarts?

  • Definitely! A simple glaze made from powdered sugar and a little milk or lemon juice drizzled over the top can add an extra layer of sweetness. You can also sprinkle them with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar right after they come out of the air fryer for added flavor.

How To Store

If you have any leftovers, you can place them on a plate, cover and refrigerate them, or place them in an airtight container. Place the container into the refrigerator, where they will last between 1-2 days.

They will start to get soggy as they age, so they should not be made ahead of time for best results.

How To Freeze

Since you are using fresh apples, these do not freeze well. As you defrost them, the apples will become soggy.
